I was hoping to get one :(

Maybe they'll work on something more advanced. I think it would be pretty sick if they made a retro console where you can purchase all the virtual console games. I had a lot of them on my Wii before it broke.
I can't say I'm overly surprised, it was probably mostly a marketing thing.

Actually, I'm more surprised about not reading a response akin to "not to worry, even if you did not get to buy a NES Classic yet, you can always get the same games for the Nintendo Switch".

Nintendo, huh?
I know at least two people in this forum that have one and haven't taken it out of the goddamn box yet.

The NES Classic Edition was probably cannibalizing the sales of the Nintendo Switch.
There's a qualifier. They stopped production for 'this year'. This suggest you might see it again next year - probably with more games so everyone has to buy one again...

Or maybe a mini SNES ;)

I don't think the NES Mini was making them any money though. After production costs and licensing fees for Capcom/SquareEnix/Capcom/etc the profit margin had to be minor if there is any. It was more of a novelty so they would have something out there and be in the limelight during the holiday season since Switch wasn't coming out until March. Also it being hacked and being used for piracy so quickly may have had something to do with it being discontinued.
Color me disappointed but not surprised. I could never find it anywhere locally or online.
The only happy people are the profiteers scalping all the minis.
The classic mini was the only thing that got me excited since the original nes/snes.
I don't care about the Switch.
So why should I give a damn about Nintendo anymore? Good-bye Nintendo.
I saw a stack of them ready to be shelved while I was at Toys 'r' Us picking up stuff for my daughter's room a while back. I was very tempted to pick one up, but chose not to as I'd just spent several hundred euros on furniture and had most of the games on my Wii U through Virtual Console.

In all honesty, I'm kicking myself a little bit for not snatching one, especially as my wife was interested in picking one up, but if you're getting one for the collector's value, I honestly don't think that they'll maintain their high market value. They're only expensive right now because of the hype and the scarcity. They don't have much of a compelling selling point: they run on emulation just like Virtual Console games, and all it'd take is for Nintendo to release the same thing as a Switch cartridge and the value will tank.

There's plenty of rare hardware out there that you can get for a song and a whistle, simply because there's little demand for it (e.g. Atari 2600s in full working order).
