So it sold well, people were clearly interested and it's being discontinued? Is this the gaming equivalent of the mcrib or something?

It sold too well. I've been trying desperately to get one since November and haven't even come close.
Wasn't the news only for North America?
I never saw the appeal of the NES mini... But still, even as a limited supply special edition hardware release, Nintendo knew that most of those consoles were (and still are) in the hands of scalpers... This is ridiculous. Nintendo being Nintendo I guess... I love my 3DS, but they don't make it easy on trusting them as a company doing this kind of thing :(

Actually no. Australia, Italy and Japan too. They cancelled NES Mini and Famicom Mini everywhere.

It is times like this where I wonder what drugs Nintendo smokes, and if I can have a hit.
Nintendo cancels? They build hype, get people excited, under stock, and then drop the project. I do not see how that builds a loyal fan base or revenue for the company.

Oh, ok. Guess the article I read was incomplete then.

"Nintendo of America would not confirm whether this announcement meant the discontinuation of the NES Classic/Famicom Mini worldwide."

Nintendo of America can't confirm what Nintendo of Europe or Japan does. That's why they didn't.
Who actually buys Nintendo nowadays? Wii and after was all gimmicky rubbish. Total lack of creativity, I mean how many re-skins of mario, xyz-kart, can people put up with (excluding the Call of Dooty lot or Fifa).

True, but I grew up with that console.

I am a helpless victim of terminal nostalgia.

I can understand that, I still get arthritis in the thumbs from Mario Kart Snes version, those little jumps and skids around corners.

There might still be a tiny amount of hope for you.

Over on Polygon.com, they added an update to their initial article about the production stop:

Quote:"Update: The Famicom Classic Edition, the Japanese version of the mini-NES, has also ended production.
Yet Nintendo phrased this announcement in an interesting way on its Japanese website:

This product has ended production for now. When production is being resumed, we will tell you on our website.

There’s no telling whether this is a “temporary” discontinuation or a permanent one, but that the company is
leaving room open for a possible return is curious."
