Question:
"What ever happened to the Dungeon Master series? That IP has been dormant for such a long time and I'd love to be able to own the trilogy on modern platforms. Any leads?"

CEO of Nightdive Studios:
"Funny you should ask - I had a conversation about a year ago with the rights holder and they were interested in working with us. I'll follow up and see if that's still the case."

That sounds promising. If you've got Twitter, heart his tweet and maybe even leave an encouraging comment.

That would be great. I would buy all those classics:

- Dungeon Master
- Chaos strikes back (this would be an AMIGA emulation, there is no PC version)
- Dungeon Master II - The Legend of Skullkeep

PLEASE make this happen, the remake would be bought as well if made well. :)

PS: cough... we need "Sakura Dungeon" here, too... cough...
Yes, I've been after Dungeon Master for a while now, this is great!
Aren't that they guys that made 1,3 million dollar disappear while they were trying to remake System Shock, without having anything to show?
That in mind, I would surely buy (and never back) Dungeon Master, if it was any good.
I remember the IP, but it just wasn't my bag, baby.

That's not fair. Nightdive is pretty cool about releasing the original versions of classic games or at least faithful remasters.

Great, but also frustrating on my end b/c I spent a chunk of time trying to reach out to who I assumed has the IP, using good contact info, only to never really get anywhere. But at least the games will hopefully get re-released.

There is a fan made PC conversion.
Also, the original and most hard core version is the ST version, which does not have the mini map scroll, something which makes mapping even harder.

Come to think of it, the fan made PC conversion is probably based on the original ST version already.

Actually, more like for some strange reason they got the idea of adding a whole bunch of stuff to System Shock which wasn't in the original game instead of creating a straight remake (which no one asked for), wasted all the KS money on this stupid goal, and then went back to a straight remake with their tail behind their legs.

This isn't new behavior for them. If you've been following them since the start, you'd be well aware of their tendency to overhype their brand, underdeliver their product and, nine times out of ten, steal credit for other people's hard work.

Thanks, did not know about the HD remake of both titles, nice conversion it seems. :)
I have to admit I am not that interested, even though as a kid the original Dungeon Master on Amiga was the best thing since the sliced bread with a thick slice of ham and cheese, oh and don't forget the mustard.

It, and its copy-cats like the Eye of the Beholder series, the first Lands of Lore etc., just haven't aged that well IMHO. The square-dancing combat and moving was maybe a necessity back then due to technical limitations, but nowadays it just feels fake (no I haven't yet played the Grimrock games, whether they are good games despite of that artificial limitation).

As for making new games based on the Dungeon Master "lore", what would that be anyway? I don't recall there being much of story in Dungeon Master games anyway, you are just told to go in a dungeon with your companions in order to kill a big baddie (and a dragon) in the lowest level of the dungeon. Weren't Grimrock games supposed to be some kind of a modernized homage to Dungeon Master, already?

Anyway, let's see what Nightdive can come up with, maybe I will be pleasantly surprised. I have been eagerly waiting for their System Shock remake, the demo version convinced me that I want to play a modernized version of System Shock.

I never did manage to get into Dungeon Master myself. I tried it ages back, but it just didn't mesh with me from some reason. The first Eye of the Beholder was more to my liking.
