A closer look at the upcoming galactic playground

As we're drawing closer and closer to reaching No Man's Sky, we are being treated to more intriguing gameplay chunks that show off some of the most common player activities in this uncommonly vast and detailed universe.
Creator Sean Murray recently took IGN through a procedurally-generated frozen planet, poking at the flora and fauna, opening up new passages, marveling at the enigmatic structures, and even trading with aliens. Before flying back into the infinite space above.

If you've missed any of the past footage shown by the developers, keep watching and get ready to jump on the hype spaceship, then go ahead and preorder the game here:

tfishell: Disappointed because it's not really newsworthy? Or...

Smannesman: That and it's not even their own video.
This should've just been posted in the pre-order thread and added to the opening post.
Now it just comes across as being unprofessional to me.
To be fair they've opened a thread about the Witcher 3 getting a patch once. :P

popperik: How is this news?
You do realise that just like with most "news" with GOG, it's an advertisement?
I don't get all the negativity - but whatever.

"Online store promotes product it sells by highlighting new video released about said product" doesn't seem so out of line of expectations of retail shops - that it surprises me there's all this moaning about it.

Oh well..
I can't shake this feeling of deja vu that I have played No Man's Sky already. Oh wait, I have! It is called Elite Dangerous.

Both games basically have the same sales pitch, "an infinite amount of worlds to visit and explore" and unless the vast majority of all gamers suddenly start to love (which I highly doubt) your own adventure type of games, sales and time spent playing the title is just going to plummet once the honeymoon is over.

Nice of them to make a simplified version of Elite Dangerous for the masses though. But I think I rather play Elite.

I kind of thought this was a more GOG friendly version of Elite Dangerous given the ability to play offline. Certainly I had been interested in Elite till the multiplayer only nature of it, I don't let games go online.

tfishell: Another one of GOG's pillars crumbled?
avatar
Smannesman: I never considered them fancy enough to have pillars, but I'm a bit disappointed.
Some time ago they actually used to have a few principles written all over the place and even advertised in a short clip they made. They were:
* global prices
* free goodies
* no drm
and some more.

However, as soon as opportunity to release some big titles appeared, they threw most of them to trash bin. Only DRM-free remains now.

Even that one is a bit iffy these days ;)

I'd say they currently have three "revised pillars" (I guess you could call it) - DRM-free (like you said), Fair Price Package, and Money-back guarantee.

Not necessarily referring to anybody here, but I am curious why some people - who are still frustrated or angry about the changes, and don't purchase games here anymore - still post on the forums (passive-aggressively posting about the "good old days" sometimes).

Totally agree but I'd have been surprised if there was not all this moaning. When there's a new game, updates, Galaxy news, changes to the website, etc... there is always a fair share of moaning so we should probably get used to it.

Exactly. So far, GOG has sold all games DRM-Free. Which means all single/non-multiplayer portions of a game must be runnable without any internet connection, or it can't be put on here for sale. No Man's Sky should be the same, or else it will be a grand litmus test of this.

I have a strong feeling this game will be similar to "Rebel Galaxy' in the sense that there will be absolutely no replay value after you finish the main objective.
avatar
Awkiba: after you finish the main objective.
I dont't think this has a main objective. Just like Elite Dangerous, this is the same kind of "go and do stuff"-game.

It have lots of replay value. You just have to have some imagination and don't be afraid to go outside main missions.

Go pirate instead of lawman. Use their ships and equipment.
Play as a mining merchant. They have special equipment and ships.
Be a amoral mercenary. Again special equipment and ships.
Man of the people with mostly Citizenry missions and standard equipment and ships.

Put a little effort in it.

Edit: And also there's the Militia road you can walk.

Im curious why GOG seems to be pushing this game? (still too pricey for many people imho).
