A closer look at the upcoming galactic playground

As we're drawing closer and closer to reaching No Man's Sky, we are being treated to more intriguing gameplay chunks that show off some of the most common player activities in this uncommonly vast and detailed universe.
Creator Sean Murray recently took IGN through a procedurally-generated frozen planet, poking at the flora and fauna, opening up new passages, marveling at the enigmatic structures, and even trading with aliens. Before flying back into the infinite space above.

If you've missed any of the past footage shown by the developers, keep watching and get ready to jump on the hype spaceship, then go ahead and preorder the game here:

CARICATUREKILB: You have got me worried...
I want to buy the PS4 version, but does it need to be online play (like the last minute switch-a-roo of Elite Dangerous)?

Zergoss: This is the main thing stopping me from buying the game, I don't want yet another requires-online to play game
I find it funny how GOG not only releases games with DRM now, but people (shills?) defend it. GOG's just steam 2.0 now, but with a smaller playerbase thus less value. Oh, and SJW-approved titles only of course.
I look forward to all hoop-jumping attempting to explain how it's not DRM when this game comes out with DRM on GOG.

shmerl: Do developers answer any questions about their plans? I tried contacting them about Linux version of the game (if it's even planned), but never got any response. I'm surely not going to buy the game until Linux version will come out.
Sean has said in interviews basically "We are a very small team, and our focus is on the PC and PS4 versions of the game."

So short version is, there won't be any other versions at launch. And right after launch the priorities will be bug fixing. The next priority after that will be a PSVR virtual reality version of the game, which they've said "Sounds like a really cool idea." And in that interview, he acted like he was worried about leaking something, so I think that one's definitely on their radar.

So I doubt you'll see a Linux version anytime in 2016. Sorry.

BTW, on the topic of PS4 single player, the same interviews stated that's a priority as well. Both initial versions of the game are going to work without an internet connection.

They release games with DRM?
Which ones?
I'm pretty sure all SP campaigns can be played fully.
It looks cool but the view distances seemed really close. Rocks and vegetation seems to be popping in at only like 20 feet out. Spaceships popping in as well. I wonder if they were playing on a console version, I certainly hope they have much better view distances on PC.

The first time you visit a planet it is creating the planet "on the fly". So the pop-in probably isn't a graphics problem, it's the planet being procedurally generated while you're standing on it. After you've been on a planet for a little while, I assume the pop-in will go away. It's probably not much different between console and PC.
Watched 40 minutes or so of these developer trailers / lovefests, and I still have trouble figuring out what it's about. I mean, sure, explore strange new worlds, name those worlds and the flora and fauna within (if there are aliens trading and fighting and whatnot, why do they not have names already? Hmm? HMM?!?), trade, shoot at things, craft things...

But is there a story behind it? One worth bothering with? Are you ever really involved with what's going on in the universe, or instead just a sidenote flying around and planting your Space Post-it Notes on everything you see?
The big worry I have is taking my time through the game and when i reach the center of the galaxy the hundred closest stars will already have been named.
Can't wait for this game.
On a side note: I see Sean Murray's beard is coming along nicely :)

I didn't realize DRM doesn't count if it only impedes multiplayer functionality.

GOG used to publish games superior even to pirate copies in both functionality and support, but decay touches us all.

GOG welcomes you to Steam. A place where pre-orders and useless in-game items are there to sway the weak minded.

That price... good grief. Steam ditched cheaper PC prices years ago... Didn't take long for GOG to adopt this.
This game seems to have a genuine sense of discovery that we rarely see in games anymore, for that reason I'm really looking forward to it.

40 quid for an indie game might be a bit steep though.

Bot really, DRM is still frustrating. There are certain issues with DRM free multiplayer though.
I'm fine with using Galaxy for Multiplayer, of course others might not be.

Multiplayer doesn't normally work on pirated copies right?

Not sure if wants that kind of advertisement for a to be released game... this isn't a news site, it's an online shop after all... :/

Especially for such an overpriced product...

tfishell: Disappointed because it's not really newsworthy? Or...
That and it's not even their own video.
This should've just been posted in the pre-order thread and added to the opening post.
Now it just comes across as being unprofessional to me.
