A closer look at the upcoming galactic playground

As we're drawing closer and closer to reaching No Man's Sky, we are being treated to more intriguing gameplay chunks that show off some of the most common player activities in this uncommonly vast and detailed universe.
Creator Sean Murray recently took IGN through a procedurally-generated frozen planet, poking at the flora and fauna, opening up new passages, marveling at the enigmatic structures, and even trading with aliens. Before flying back into the infinite space above.

If you've missed any of the past footage shown by the developers, keep watching and get ready to jump on the hype spaceship, then go ahead and preorder the game here:

Smannesman: Great.. now you're creating news topics for Youtube finds.

tfishell: Another one of GOG's pillars crumbled?
I don't think "no news posts about third-party YouTube videos" was ever one of GOG's "pillars". I just guess nobody ever imagined it would be an issue ;-)

CARICATUREKILB: You have got me worried...
I want to buy the PS4 version, but does it need to be online play (like the last minute switch-a-roo of Elite Dangerous)?
avatar
Zergoss: This is the main thing stopping me from buying the game, I don't want yet another requires-online to play game
GOG wouldn't be selling it if the single-player (i.e., the game) was going to require any online connection. ; )

Martek: As always - will await the actual release - although it looks tempting to pre-order. (But so have other pre-orders - that later looked like, "phew, that's why I don't pre-order").

Marioface5: Feel free to pre-order, as on GOG there's no risk to it. As long as you don't download anything, you have 30 days to refund the game after release, and of course you can cancel the pre-order at any time before release as well.
While I appreciate your sentiment, and am aware there are "protections" in place from GOG on pre-orders; as a practice it is just something I don't "do". There are often "surprises" (for example, how Oculus requires Facebook "spyware" - which was never mentioned [but isn't surprising either]).

There's really little incentive for me to pre-order - the discount isn't nearly big enough - there won't be any "shortage" of product after release - and for a title this costly, I want to let it "shake out" in public for a little bit anyways; and see if it matches up to the hubbub.

On the flip side, if I did pre-order, then, after release I can see it becoming a "hmm do I want to "return" this just on this or that "little thing". It might become tempting to "ignore" stuff that does really bother me - that I might not make the purchase because of - but if I pre-ordered, I might instead decide to "live with". Don't want to go there either.

It's just a personal thing. But I understand that it seems to be important for others to be able to do it.
Doesn't that preorder defeat the purpose of exploring on our terms? Seems like just easy street in the beginning.
How is this news?
This thread is similar to typical stuff on video game news websites. HYPE. ;)
Seems like only yesterday all GOG games were under $10...

Pretty looking game, but I am also in the "don't want to pre-order or do EA (in development) on GOG". Pre-order bonus not really that enticing to make me change that stance ... still, does look pretty.....
Do developers answer any questions about their plans? I tried contacting them about Linux version of the game (if it's even planned), but never got any response. I'm surely not going to buy the game until Linux version will come out.

Smannesman: I never considered them fancy enough to have pillars, but I'm a bit disappointed.
Disappointed because it's not really newsworthy? Or...

GOG should encourage the devs to have a pre-order Q&A; that would be newsworthy.

Hey its like back when I watched the youtube video of how Saints Row 4 did came to gog :)

Waitaminute... I never saw that. Why?

Because they post youtube clips about games I already pre-ordered instead of getting SR4 to their store!! :( (<- imagine it an angry not a sad smiley).

Sounds like what they said about my gym membership. I can cancel at any time...

Totally this.

Breja: Scotty, I need more hype in three minutes or we're all dead!
Watching those four IGN HYPE! videos, spotted a reference to logging into a central server for sharing your explorational naming - which gains one in-game monies. Would think those monies would be a requisite for the purchase of necessary upgrades, etc.

I'm very old, so I could be barking up the wrong exotic alien flora.

Indeed, that would be very useful.
I would've liked to have seen more of the space combat and interactions between in-game factions. Can you take part in inter-faction wars, or is it just trading and piracy?

Also, does the game remember all that terrain deformation once you move outside the draw radius?
