Can anyone tell me if Stonekeep is worth playing? I have been rather hesitant about it, after not really enjoying Legend of Grimrock, but this looks like it has a lot more going for it than Grimrock. But would I likely enjoy Stonekeep, based on that, or should I just pass it up?

So you did not enjoy the game that took the classic dungeon crawlers but streamlined them to be really polished and user friendly and you ask if you are going to enjoy one of its (raw) influencers?

Well, I'd say that you should pass it up. And if you are interested in classic gog dungeon crawlers, begin with Eye Of The Beholder 2, a game with the rare quality back then of being fair to the player.

It is fun. A lot.
But (ban me if you want, GOG!) the most fun I had with this one was during a chilling starry night playing the amazing Wii version. Yes, I'm being serious.

C ya!

Sounds to me like I probably shouldn't bother with Stonekeep after all.

Well, I guess I could possibly try Eye of the Beholder II, even if it means having to buy the whole trilogy. I'll just wait for a sale on that, then decide. Thanks for the reply and suggestion.
Many classics.
Is Judgment Rites a direct sequel to 25th Anniversary or are they both standalone, self-contained Star Trek episodes that you could play in any order? If I were to buy only one of them, which one would you recommend? Which one has the better story?

Yes, sorry for being such a downer, but the last two step-by-step dungeon crawlers, this one and Anvil of Dawn, always felt to me much more hardcore and demanding than Dungeon Master or the mentioned EOB2 (EOB1 is a bit more primitive, EOB3 is just flawed). The barroque style, the quirks in dungeon design...

The thing about Grimrock, again, is that it took cues from all of these games (really: all) and discarded the parts when they became too frustrating (rolling the stats till death in Wizardry 6/7, the slow magic animations of Anvil of Dawn, the messy inventory management of both Anvil and Stonekeep...). Now, the only thing that you could prefer about the games I am mentioning is that they are much more plot-heavy, where Grimrock 1 just didn't care for any kind of characterization. Personally, I cannot be able to go back to the Stonekeep graphics, such a mishmash of styles given by the 5-years development hell it was stuck in.

Risingson: the slow magic animations of Anvil of Dawn
I just wanted to say that, if you improve the corresponding school of magic, the casting of the spells of that school speed up considerably to the point where it’s not even slower than a normal attack.

I'd interject though that there's also one thing that can make Legend of Grimrock slightly more frustrating than the oldschool dungeon crawler, that is LOG's overemphasis of the "dance around the monsters" mechanics. In the old dungeon crawlers this was just a tactical option among others, in LOG it feels almost like a requirement, at least in the beginning. If you always face the monsters head-on and just hack at them instead of constantly evading their attacks by side-stepping, they will quickly destroy you. This was never the case in the old games, although Stonekeep felt rather difficult in that regard, too.

Apart from EOB2, I also recommend to take a look at Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos. It's even more story-oriented and user-friendly and already has an automap (which EOB2 lacks).

Yeah, I agree on that.

I am right now replaying LOL and don't think it is THAT player friendly. It has a simplified interface, better graphics and music, but the mazes require even more backtracking than the previous Westwood games, and there is a lot of frustrating respawns everywhere. And I never liked the artificial level caps there. Apart from that, great game :D

They are sequels in a sense that Judgment Rites picks up and finishes some Plotpoints from 25th. But you could play JR without knowledge of 25th.
Judgemt Rites is a change from the previous game in the series, Star Trek: 25th Anniversary, in that at least half the missions are part of an ongoing story arc, and one is a direct sequel to the final mission of the previous game. The space battle sequences are now completely optional, with adjustable difficulty. (from JR Wiki)

At the current deal i would pick both. But if i had to choose i would take JR. And be it only because it looks and sounds a bit nicer.
