I come from steam, and I am thinking of switching to GOG for they have a more attractive service.

one thing that has always annoyed me on steam is the abusive forum managers, and the lack of initiative/care from steam to do anything about it, I will point out the problems I see there and would like to know if they repeat over here.

1.you can get banned/perma banned for any or no reason, and the only way to dispute it is to send an email to the game's dev companies, which mostly doesn't care/is afraid to worsen their relations with their forum managers, so they don't do anything, and you have to cower yourself before empowering admins, which is very, very obnoxious.

2.when a thread gets deleted steam doesn't say what was deleted, you will receive a new message(or not), and when you see the message's panel, there is a link saying "this item has been removed/deleted", but it doesn't say what was deleted, many important threads warning of a game's possible crappiness, or about distressing actions made by shady companies, or just plain exposing admin abuse gets deleted by scummy devs/admins without warning/reason, how is that managed here?

3.can we slur like a sailor with broken legs?

4.are the admin's good judges of an ongoing dispute(argumental or not) in a thread?as being emotionally detached from the dispute, being impartial, being patient, not being enraged by silly provocations etc... I consider this important when you are a forum judge, how is that executed here?

5.is the quoting system in a thread a clusterfuck here like it is on steam? When you have to reply to many people on the steam forums, it just becomes such a mess, how is that feature executed here?

6. do the game developers have the ability to mass flag review here?that happens on steam sometimes, I am curious if that happens here as well.

that's it, thank you in advance!

You're going to hate it here. Welcome aboard.

They only ever show up if you're really, really unlucky. If there are rules, i've long forgotten what they are since they aren't enforced. Good thing, too, since we still have a civil war going on about gog's intentions for the future regarding galaxy.
A troublemaker seeking a new place to hang out, huh?

Welcome aboard, then!

So, GOG is very hands-off for the most part I'd say, and that can be a blessing and a curse. You're very unlikely to be banned; even some people here are obnoxiously anti-GOG and haven't gotten banned yet. Most reviews stay up unless they are spam. Threads are rarely locked unless they really get out of control or the creator asks for them to be locked. The forum software was made in-house and is 10 years old and it can be fucky at times. Beware that because GOG is much smaller than Steam, I think it's fair to say devs don't often pay attention to their game forums here unless a game is selling well and thus the forum is likely to be active. Only admins are GOG employees, "bluetexts". Some game forums may be very inactive, thus you may have to ask your question on the main forum or contact Support.

I didn't answer all your questions, but my main advice would be just try the forums out and see, if it's really important to you. Both GOG and Steam forums are gonna have pros and cons.

Well, talking about and promoting piracy is one thing that may get your messages removed or a thread locked, and in general if some (political) discussion gets far too heated.

Anyway, I was even accused of making an indirect death threat, yet I got away with it! Unbelievable! You just need to be sneaky about them, like saying "I hope you die of an old age!".

icarus_improviser: 1.you can get banned/perma banned for any or no reason
I only remember two users who got banned on GOG. It's almost impossible to get a ban here. (edit: There were more that I forgot when I first wrote this. We had a "moderator" here a few months ago who started to hand out short time bans. She's gone for a while now and she didn't really achieve anything.)

icarus_improviser: 2.when a thread gets deleted steam doesn't say what was deleted
[...]
how is that managed here?
We once had a thread called "fuck fuck fuck cock blow" or something like that... Admins renamed it into "Flowers Flowers Sunshine Daisies" and put the word "fuck" (in capital letters) into some kind of filter. Since then you can't write fuck in caps anymore (your post won't go through). So it's the same as with bans: It's almost impossible to get your thread deleted. If it happens, you'll be contacted by the admins.

icarus_improviser: 3.can we slur like a sailor with broken legs?
Hard to say... The last sailor we had here left the forums a couple of years ago, grumbling something about our bad manners :/
avatar
icarus_improviser: 4.are the admin's good judges of an ongoing dispute(argumental or not) in a thread?
No, they're not. They rarely intervene in any disputes. Technically, there are rules on GOG. Factually, Admins don't give a fuck. You need to report a post (there's no report function) to get an admin involved.

icarus_improviser: 5.is the quoting system in a thread a clusterfuck here like it is on steam? When you have to reply to many people on the steam forums, it just becomes such a mess, how is that feature executed here?
That's one of the few things that GOG did right with their forum software. You can quote someone who quoted a post. If someone qoutes your post now, the 3rd quote (the quoted post in the post you quoted) gets thrown out. Two levels of quoting. That's it. Just don't mess with the closing quote tag or it'll end worse than anything on Steam...

icarus_improviser: 6. do the game developers have the ability to mass flag review here?that happens on steam sometimes, I am curious if that happens here as well.
I have no idea what "mass flag review" means, but... I don't think devs have any real power here. They can write with orange font, but that's pretty much it.

You're welcome.

[I've been banned three times for swearing but it seems up to the discretion of whoever is in the forum, and TBH, while I love swearing, the three times I got nailed, there was really no place for it and as pissed as I was, I can't hold it against GOG.

Sometimes a comment requires a good "fuck" to get your point across, and sometimes it doesn't. The times I got nailed I was screaming "fuck" over and over and over when neither the conversations nor the comments themselves really needed them even once.

Profanity is an art. Master it and you can be Picasso; abuse, and you are just some idiot doing 'Paint By Numbers'.

And that's only because Tauto loves you (and the taste of our vanished mod's butthole) so much. Without him reporting every single post of you, you wouldn't have been banned (not even once). Not even kleetus or KiNgBrOkEnKeYbOaRdBrAdLeY managed to get banned. And Bradley really tried everything to get the boot (talking about "subhuman scum" and all that crap). We all know he's just a little attention whore and doesn't even know what he's saying, but... Whether he means it or not: GOG is the only public forum where you don't get banned for that shit.
Short answer? They aren't.
I'd say the old and/or regular users are also curious about how the forums are managed. Good luck investigating that.

Seriously, the answer would be : discreetely. At the expense of exemplarity, you never really know what is, has been, isn't being moderated, who got or didn't get chastized for what, who got a temp ban or not. We're sometimes told to not assume anything. And to not "self-moderate" the forums (to not react to abject pieces of neonazi propaganda, for instance, or to let various minorities getting singled out and deshumanized in the forum). But given the much worse shape of the forums some months ago, before the arrival of the now (sadly) gone moderator, I'd say that stuff do happen. Silently. Discreetely. Nobody knows what or how.
