downloaded The Cat Lady. ran installer and game numerous times under all available compatibility modes. no matter what, i get some runtime error about 'import agsteam achievement^1' something or other (that is not the exact error message). i gave up on games years ago because i could rarely get them to run properly (in windows, they always worked in DOS). figured i would give gog a try, but my first attempt has been less than spectacular. google wasn't much help either, looking for a fix. any ideas? i'm running windows xp service pack three/32 bit with directx 9.0c. i tried changing the resolution to 600x800 but that didn't help either. dell xg280 with stock onboard graphics chipset. i was hoping to dedicate this antiquated machine to playing antiquated games. 2g ram. if i can't get this (relatively simple) one to run, i certainly won't be trying any others. thanks in advance...

Script link failed: Runtime error: unresolved import 'AGSteam::SetAchievementAchieved^1'

java 7 update 71

i have nothing steam related on this pc. i don't belong to steam. i stumbled upon gog and thought i would give a simple and cheap game a try. i haven't played games in years. now i remember why...

I mean looks like the devs left some steamworks related things in the game and it causes the problem
But maybe I'm wrong.

Check the links I wrote above, maybe those will help.

i agree about the devs. perhaps that's why it is on sale for $1.99? will try again with your link info. thanks for your input...

tried removing the default agsteam dll altogether, then tried substituting the windows dll from the link you provided. neither worked.

You may always contact the GOG support, and/or request a refund if the game still not working.
Contact GOG support at the link at the bottom of the page if you are unable to find a solution, they'll try to help out.

I can understand your frustration, but don't give up on GOG yet.

I don't have a steam account either and have not run into this problem, but people here are willing to help, GOG support offers help, and if neither works, GOG does offer a full refund.

GOG games are DRM free and as such you can put them on several machines, have you tried installing on any other PC to see if you get the same result or if it works?

Can't help you with Cat Lady as I don't own it but there are few free games and demos on GOG that you can experiment with.
I've played a bit of the cat lady and didn't have any of those issues. Curious...

My first inclination is wondering if the installer was corrupted, but I'm going to guess no if it extracted all right.

But I can't think of any other useful suggestions really to give.

Don't be fooled by the looks of some games. Depending on the engines they make them in they can be more demanding than the Flash-based crap exterior suggests. And as you've found out, indie devs are crappy programmers.

Personally with your setup I'd just download D-Fend Reloaded and play some games like God of Thunder and Major Stryker. They'll pretty much run out of the box and it's all free/freeware.

Also...why are you using this old machine anyway? Can you not afford a basic modern computer?

i do have other/better computers running win7 and win10. i have this xp machine basically taking up space and hoped to use it for older games (which i like for nostalgic reasons). i sent an email to gog support with a dxdiag summary. hoping they have some suggestions. not worth asking for a refund ($1.99). anyway, this was a test install. i have other games on my wishlist i was anticipating getting as well.

thanks to everyone for the comments/suggestions/sympathies...
Is there a file named AGSteam.dll in the game's folder?
If the answer is no, you should download and install the game again.
If the answer is yes, you should take a look in the Windows directory for another copy of the same file: an older version of the library might create a conflict.

yes, that file does exist in the game folder. i will check windows for another and rename, if found. thanks for the suggestion.

UPDATE: just fired up the XP machine and searched C: for a conflicting file. nothing found.

PS - i've downloaded the game twice already. after the first batch of failures, i ran the uninstaller, then ccleaner to scrub the registry, then manually deleted any remaining folders before trying again. it appears to install, it just won't run.
