dtgreene: There was a major outcry about auto-playing videos when the new re-design launched earlier today, and it seems the outcry was big enough to disable this "feature"; the topic was posted during the time videos did auto-play.
In other words, they did auto-play when this topic was made, but the auto-play was removed before your post in this topic, hence why you likely didn't encounter this.
Valer1us: This is exactly what has happened, and I am more than happy not to have these autoplay videos anymore.
I don't know why nowadays devs are even
thinking that these might me a good idea. Is it just because it is possible to play video content due to fast(er) internet? We had those blinking and flashing websites in the late 90s/early 2000s with all that gif and flash nonsense, and it died for a good reason. Let's hope it does not come back ever.
Anyways, I am glad GOG decided against autoplay videos.
I think they saw popular websites (like YouTube and Twitch) do the auto-play video thing, and decided it was a good idea here. (I actually dislike auto-play even on websites like YouTube where video is the whole point of the site.)
(I note that Flash was not universally present; it required proprietary software to be installed on the client, and for Linux/BSD users in particularly, it was often not installed (especially in cases such as BSD, which is even lesser known than Linux and hence less likely to be supported). It also wasn't easily available for non-x86 systems, which wasn't much of an issue back then, but is now with smartphones and things like Raspberry Pis.)
