omega64: All files are required to install, Galaxy just downloads the game files instead of the installer.
Both are probably around the same size.
avatar
SirPrimalform: Not necessarily. The installers are compressed, whereas Galaxy currently downloads the game as installed, completely uncompressed. Best bet is probably to use Galaxy to download the 'backup' (installer) if bandwidth is an issue.
avatar
amrit9037: Whatever way you choose you will end up downloading 14GB.
avatar
SirPrimalform: Not true, see above.
avatar
nightcraw1er.488: Sorry, where are you getting 14gb from?
avatar
SirPrimalform: That's probably the size of the installation, and thus the size of the download if you install through Galaxy. Galaxy doesn't download the files compressed so it downloads the installation at its full size. The installers are obviously compressed, hence the size you're talking about.
Galaxy downloads aren't compressed?
Why? xD
H-hi new gogger O_o'

Because Galaxy is only half finished and they rushed it out... Apparently it's on the to-do list.

nightcraw1er.488: Good grief Galaxy really is crap then.
It's just half baked. People make the excuse that Steam didn't work well when it was first released, but that's not really relevant when we're talking about how things are now. Don't get me wrong, I love DRM-free games and I'm glad Galaxy exists, but it's an embarrassment at the moment when compared to Steam in terms of features and functionality.

Navagon: Galaxy is trying to emulate Steam in downloading games in a way that they're basically installed through the process of downloading. This methodology really needs some workable compression applied to it because you're right, it's crap without that.
Yes, and that's really the problem, we don't want steam here, but it brings in new custom. Use browser downloads, fight the brainless common denominator client software!
avatar
Navagon: Yeah, I get that but it's like having a 'Welcome to Florida! Please don't get killed in a tornado or eaten by crocodile!' sign at Miami airport.
Miami is more subtle than that. (But not much.)

They added sunshine logos to certain exit ramp signs on major roadways. These are exits to areas which are relatively safe for tourists. Too many visitors were exploring unsafe areas and getting clobbered. Also, Miami required that all car rental agencies remove logos from their cars, as they helped local thieves and muggers to target tourists.

(I know this wasn't really your point. I just find it interesting.)

Having a client install things in a pretty intelligent way (Steam) is not a bad thing or something that's going to make things bad. If bringing in new customers is bad then things are either going to get that kind of bad or the kind of bad where GOG goes out of business.

The problem here is that Galaxy in its primitive state isn't matching Steam closely enough.

Bloody hell. Sounds like if it gets any worse there they'll have to send in the troops and take it back street by street. That's pretty crazy that they'd have to go to those kinds of lengths.

But what really sucks is that your info invalidates my analogy; as GOG's not anywhere near Miami levels of bad.

Oh, I was just warning this new forum member about our local extraterrestrial elder god, who drives people into madness with his stories about donkeys and his explicit depictions of rodent necrophilia.

Wait... IT'S YOU! *runs around in circles, flailing his arms, then dive-jumps through the next window*
