What is the "Colgate TIM"? I was not getting any explanations from google

TIM refers to the thermal paste used between the processor and cooler. So I can only guess that somebody used Colgate tooth paste as thermal paste.

EDIT: Actually read the comments, which I should have done before posting. It's a jab at Intel, who uses cheap thermal paste between the die and the integrated heat spreader as a way to cut prices. AMD solders their processors.

Intel's Coffee Lake arrived and both 8600K (the one I want) and 8350K (the one I would be OK with) can now be found on shops' shelves. Motherboards are also available for as little as €120 for ATX and a bit more for mATX, which annoys me as I think that is the perfect format for a normal gaming computer. RAM, on the other hand, has increased brutally in price :-( End result being that an equally powerful system would cost the same as I balked at in the autumn.

Back to seeing what I can do about my current computer. Maybe I could live with this one for a whole ten years.

-- I am getting a newer used GPU so that side should be alright soon. Question is, will my current case keep the parts cool enough with a bigger GPU? Probably not so off to the shop to buy a new case. I REALLY would prefer mATX but may have to get a small ATX case instead so I can use ATX sized motherboards. Suggestions are welcome but price must be under €100, VAT included.

-- Only having 2*2GB RAM is a big problem for me already so I looked at buying some more. An additional 2*2GB DDR3 would be €40. Maybe I should do that. Feels strange to buy more RAM for such an old computer (2009).

-- I guess I could look for something used but then I need to trust the seller.

Attached an example of a nice looking case to my taste. This one is only too old and too expensive.

Since the price of DDR4 RAM these days has you instead looking at refurbing your current PC, has the price gone up so high that the €140 in upgrades (case and DDR3) makes sense on an 8-year old PC as opposed to just paying the higher price for DDR4 and getting a fresh start with nearly all-new hardware?

Or did that higher RAM cost simply push the whole thing out of reach for the time being?

It kind of is out of reach with acceptable level of new CPU+MB+RAM. I need a new case in any errh case no matter whether new central components or not. Now I am debating whether the adding of RAM makes sense.

From 900$ to 300$.. I'd say wait & save up and buy a good pc in the future, instead of a crap one now..

Okay, that makes more sense now. Was just thinking that if the DDR4 was now ~€140 more and the upgrades to the older machine were around the same price, wouldn't make sense to pour the money into the old one. But if the budget is putting a cap on things... I get it.

Wow! That's some serious ouch going on. I do hope you get it all figured out.

I also have an old pc (from 2010.) but if i was to buy a processor (new pc now) i wouldn't go bellow Ryzen 5 1600 since i'm also looking to be as much future proof as it can. And the price has dropped a lot, it can be found for 185€ (Spanish Amazon), dunno about the price in Finland.

Well that one is more than Intel's 8350K here but looks alright too.

I gave up on a completely new computer but I cannot seem to quite kill the dream :-/

Alright so that post was made in September and I would not build that one today anymore, especially since everyone said not to do only two cores, hyperthreaded or not. Indeed looks like only Z370 motherboards available for now for the 8000 series from Intel, which is why I see little sense in anything under 8350K from Intel.
