First - Earthsea is an excellent series, made all the better for how mature its themes are despite being, as you put in other words, very "magical". +1 for bringing it up, it's fantasy canon but I think very forgotten.

Second - both LeGuin and Gaiman are absolute masters at both worldbuilding and the actual wordcraft. If you expect that level from more than 1% of fantasy you will be constantly disappointed. Oh... wait... ;)

rtcvb32: To be perfectly honest, i still like the animated version that was from 1977. There's a couple things that are a tad slow, but at no point does it feel unwelcome. That and it was made about the same time as The Last Unicorn (well the art style is very similar), and a few other classics which i think remakes today usually would fail.
The animated Hobbit, other than some weird design decisions with the elves and Smaug, is in fact quite a good adaptation, lightyears ahead of Peter Jackson's trilogy, anda very enjoyable movie. That said, even the russian version with ballet dancers as goblins is better and closer to the source than the Jackson trilogy :D

Although, a D&D movie is actually one where 4-th wall breaking could work. If done well, it could be quite funny if the characters spoke out of character, as the unseen players, commented on fumbled rolls and critical hits or not having the right skill for something, or exhibited meta knowledge of some lore. You know, something like Darths & Droids style movie.

You know, now that you mention it, a gruesome and gruelling battle punctuated (or even ended) by a scene like this would be pretty damn funny.

I was thinking without actually showing us the game going on, just with the characters talking as players as time around them stops, or maybe as other (NPC :D) characters just kind of standing around bored waiting for them to finish, and the DM as a Bard's Tale like narrator.

Last I heard the Hobo movie was delayed indefinitely, due to Fox seeing that Hobo lacked A-list status as a recognizable character. With the success of GOTG, Ant-Man and Fox's own Deadpool, however...I'm sure we're going to see some real progress on that movie being made soon.

Just reminded me of The Gamers 3: Hands of fate, multiple times in the movie where they are trying to get the game going and it's a total failure :P

Huh. This one looks way better than the other one. The acting is way better. I might actually watch the rest later :)

The second one is a lot better too. I think the dead gentlemen group was started in college as a side project or something, and then expanded out to some decent stuff...

Then if you go back through their old stuff you'll find things like.. Syphilitic Ninja Vampires...

This isn't the same as the movie offered on GOG, is it? I was watching that clip and it was great. I'd definitely want to see more.

Pretty sure it is. They changed the name to Zorfeous productions or something...

https://www.gog.com/movie/the_gamers_hands_of_fate - here it is. Same movie, but they put out most of their stuff for free. As i recall a lot of their stuff is funded by fans.

One thing's for sure- they have to get Vin Diesel for this. It's a must. The guy is the number one D&amp;D geek among hollywood stars. It would be criminal not to have him as the star of it. And with stuff like this he could do wonders for the marketing of the movie.
