I checked an Haswell (i5) config too, but the new one for Skylake seems better.
Price is similar, mobos have many new ports, ram is DDR4, consumption seems better.

Eh, I really need a new pc, though.
The GPU prices are annoying, but the 980 seems the only good one for future proofing.
I won't abandon 1080p for quite a while, 2K is too demanding.

How about this for future proofing:
-next year we'll see releases of GPU's based on the new 14nm FinFET tech, AMD just announced today that they have successfully fabbed their first 14nm sample chip.
-14nm+HBM+whatever will mean a huge jump in performance, probably meaning that next year middle-end cards (200-300usd) will beat the shit out of todays high-end cards (just imagine a Pascal or whatever it'll be called with HighBandwithMemory fabbed on a 14nm node).
-don't forget that the current node process 28nm is very old, like 5 years or smtg?
GTX980 for 1080p is way overspending. And there's maximum one year of "future proofing", until 14nm comes.
taking into consideration the above rationale also, it's easy to do the right thing: get now a GTX960 which will be enough for 1080p gaming and then in a year or so get the new 14nm midrange and you'll be probably good even for 4k too.

I'm talking about running games at good specs, I doubt that a 960 could do much.
Just for example, The Witcher 3 at high\ultra could get 15-30fps with only 2Gb ram.
The 980 would run at 30-60 with 4Gb, instead.

Anyway yes, I'll see what will show up next year.

I'm pretty sure a 960 can handle all of your gaming needs. Look up some benchmarks.

You can get one for an affordable price now and upgrade the GPU in a few years. (And possibly sell the 960)

Integrated graphics are never that great for gaming anyway. Well, try it when you get a proper GPU at least :)

Uh, I've read that the normal i5-6600 uses the scary Trusted Computing technology, whilst the 6600K doesn't.

Also, Software Guard Extensions is in every Skylake..

A 4790k should be fine - I'm still using the i7 2600k I got almost 5 years ago & I'm not feeling any pressure to upgrade.

I have an i5-4590 which has Trusted Execution Technology enabled, from a Linux user perspective this hasn't affected me in the 1 year since I've built it.

Also, my other system with an i5-2400 (Released in 2011) has Trusted Execution Technology too and has seen 3 years of Win7. Nowadays it serves as a test machine for various Linux distros, haven't had any issues all this time.

I think that such a feature has only use in a company and is less likely to be utilized for home users. As for SGX I don't really know.

Personally I wouldn't worry too much about this and would pick whatever processor I wish.

That's the best non-Skylake i7, right?
It costs 170€ more than the i5-4790k however, so.. probably nope.

Well it has been here for years, It may not affect Linux users considering the open nature of the OS, but can't say the same with MS, they're full of limitations and unwanted surprises these past years.

i5-4790k doesn't exist, i7 however does. :P Best Haswell-E is i7-5960X but i7-5820K is best cost-effective cpu for the money. Dunno about the prices in Italy but here in Serbia i could get i7-4790K for 315 eur and i7-5820K for 365 eur which is only 50 eur difference.
