Allow me to enlighten you:
http://www.thegreatestgameyouwilleverplay.com/
Yes, that is a legit website, dedicated to all things NetHack.

zeogold: Ew, an RPG.
Looks kinda boring.

*watches as post gets a "low rated" mark*
*gasp* Be careful, boredom is the number one cause of death for inexperienced hackers.

Ha, that website is more professional-looking than the "official" one. =D

Ha, that's great :D I really gotta try this game.

dtgreene: There are some jokes in the game.

For example, there is an enemy called a quantum mechanic. When killed, it drops a box with a cat inside it.
Is the cat alive or dead?

Glad you asked. It turns out that the box is special; the game doesn't actually determine whether the cat is alive or dead until you actually open the box. (This can be verified by looking at the source code.)

JMich: Yes.
Actually, if you haven't opened the box yet, I think the correct answer might actually be "no".

Are people playing nethack 3.4.3 or 3.6.0 release.
People who regularly ascended in 3.4.3 are very buttocks-sore about the changes in 3.6.0
Magic Resistance toned down, and elbereth sign decay is the major buttock soreness complaint from the ascension-braggers.

rtcvb32: Reading the opening post i thought you said HackNet. Still both are bound to be good :)

Real good rogue-likes... Gotta love them :)

Others to consider: <span class="bold">ADOM</span>, ToME, Dungeons of Dredmore.
Amatures.

That is all you need.

Someone ask dtgreene aka hickory why they are all produced by men?

I'm playing 3.6.0, but then, I'm no pro. One day i will ascend and that day is not today.

Perhaps. Depends on how deeply you invest your time and life. There are those that will swear by Dark Souls games, while I just can't bother to put the time into it. Much like LoL and other games where you need thousands of hours to get good and play optimally, vs playing for recreation.

It doesn't take much for something to truly be complex enough to enjoy. I'd refer to CRobots as an example, where you are merely controlling a single tank to take out the other tank(s), however the complexity is only as much as you choose it to be, while it will still result in very very complex behavior or difficult to master.

Between Rogue-like games, I've probably put 80 hours into all of them together. Most into ADOM and Dungeons of Dredmore, and still have yet to go anywhere near deep enough to finish the game, with or without mods. ToME probably has a good 10 hours from me.
I played Nethack(3.4.3) off a usb stick, and usually rolled with a barbarian.....named Kenny##.
Got up to Kenny45 before I foolishly erased that USB Stick,
Highlight of all the Kenny deaths was Vampire Kenny20 killing Kenny23.

Personally, I need to check out 3.6.0. My metagame knowledge is that identity scrolls are cheapest, and that barbarians are immune to poison.

Only 'programming game' I ever played with was http://necrobones.com/atrobots/
I never found them to be that fun always same concept one coding language or another and robots

Id consider them more like time killers than actual games you can get into though.

Most popular one of course corewars

Curious, although the circumstances of how you have to program them could make a difference. In CRobots you have several basic open source examples, one being a sniper, one that and others that... I don't remember, since the sniper is the only one I remember. Some of the most efficient code will be something along the same lines...

Although I had fun making one dubbed 'RAMMING SPEED'.. which literally would run into it's opponents and ignore firing at them. It did become far more menacing once I started firing while ramming up until they were like 50 units away...
Anyone make any accensions on nethack 3.6.0 or with Nethack4 4.3-beta2?
My barbarian attempts: nope, YASD supremacy.
In Nethack 3.6.0, I have only achieved dungeon level 10 by a barbarian.
Now I'm playing original rogue, which have achieved level 18 twice.but trolls always kill me. :(
