I am surprised that people did not saw this coming. One look at the gender of writers in the link below raises enough red flags about the show being a failure and filled with SJW nonsesnse.

They will feminize the series and throw in random people from various background to ensure equality....
That is going to happen whether anyone likes it or not.

Just look at the picture of their lead writers and their belief in open border policies.

Just ... Why?

FFS, I am fine with colorblind casting if the actor is right for the part, but to just go "Nope: can't be white" and then on top of it to go with a minor when the series is explicitly graphic on both sex and violence, & if you read the books: Ciri ain't celebant ... Or straight.

Socratatus: You think that`s bad? The BBC makes Medieval shows with black women in positions of royalty in Medieval England when there`s no way in hell that would ever have happened. It`s not even am alternate reality, it`s depicted as historical!

It`s like having a white man play the part of a Zulu warrior in Africa!

By the way I`m black.
sorry to burst your bubble, but there where black women in the British isles, and even among the nobility, before the 1500. Mostly through political marriages with for example Spanish and Italian families with African ascendants, but also through trade with for example the Moors, and even a few leftovers from the Roman invasion. Funnily enough, history do not point to any racism back then, but that black women where treated equally to white.

That is a rather a rather stupid decision, but eh, as long as the show is good I don't really care...I probably won't even watch it. :P

babark: Man, this is the WORST!
It's just like that time they cast Idris Elba as Heimdal in that fictional movie series based on the fictional superhero based on Norse methology! The character being several shades darker than is traditionally expected totally objectively RUINED the character, and thus the whole series irredeemably!
I have Norse blood in my veins and I've got to disagree with you. Granted I've only seen the last Thor, I had a blast. Race was not a distraction. The valkyrie was black too. No bother.

As far as the Lord of the Flies being hypothetically ruined because of an all female cast, I don't think so. The story might go a bit differently but does anyone remember Battle Royale? Half the cast was female. Also there was one group, all female, and they couldn't keep things together. Anyway...

I almost got through the first Witcher game and can't say how much casting a black person would ruin it. However there has been talk in this forum about who should be cast as the Witcher and I would be more bothered with Henry Cavill as The Witcher than this. That said, I would give him a chance. Maybe he could pull it off and maybe I wouldn't be so upset about it.

richlind33: Or Lord Of The Flies with girls. It's infantile.
avatar
tinyE: The reason that isn't going to work is in reality it would be boring as hell.

If a group of girls were stuck on a deserted island they would immediately come together, organize, allocate responsibilities, allocate jobs. In an hour they'd have a fully functioning, peaceful civilization. There would be no war parties, cast offs, in fighting, or murdering.

Who the hell wants to drive their ass all the way to the theater and pay $6 to see that!?
My issue is with "updating" other people's works. Yes, it *can* be done well, with satisfying results, but when it's done for narrow ideological purposes I think it goes well beyond what can be deemed acceptable under the scope of artistic license. Write new works if that's what you're about.

Telika: But of course, we know it's not about adaptation faithfulness. It's, magically, only when a change pertains to skin colour or minority representations that you get such outrage.
avatar
Gersen: You mean like the outrage when Scarlet Johansson was cast to play in Ghost in the Shell or when Tilda Swinton was cast as the old one in Doctor Strange or maybe the shit storm because a Chinese director dared cast Matt Damon to play in his big budget monster flicks (The Great Wall) ?
I recall plenty of tantrums being thrown when a white actor was cast to play a white character in Iron Fist.
On one hand, I agree that slavs and slavic culture are underrepresented in media. On the other, Henry Cavill isn't slav either and you know most of them won't mind.
This seems like it could come across as kind of white savior-y if not handled with some serious care.

Still, hard to imagine it being any more distracting than Superman being Geralt.

Might as well have her played by an Apache helicopter now!

I really hope they don't try to go for the annoying "Ye Olde English" style the translations I read were in. Made the books impossible for me to read.
So when someone gets around to doing a Roots remake, we should expect to see ethnic diversity among the slaves?
I really hope that this Geralt character has a moustache.

That's actually a good point.
Henry is English.

Why didn't anyone get upset when they cast him to play a Kryptonian?
avatar
Linko90: Second reminder. This is not a topic about gender
Why not? If they made Ciri black, what would stop them from making Geralt a woman?
avatar
Telika: I really hope that this Geralt character has a moustache.
Might as well give him a neckbeard at this point. lol

Gonchi: I recall plenty of tantrums being thrown when a white actor was cast to play a white character in Iron Fist.
I also recall plenty of anger about the Last Samurai. I'm not sure if it was because it was about the "white savior" trope or if it was just because it was specifically Tom Cruise though. :p

As for Ciri - given her genealogy her race should match those she descended from. Unless they're gonna do absolutely massive changes to the source material - that pretty much means white. I'll keep an open mind though as long as it makes sense within the setting. Everyone is gonna be searching for a young white girl with green eyes so if somebody used magic to disguise her as a different race it might make sense - but just having her a different race with no explanation wouldn't jive at all.
