I wouldn't call it obscure, maybe just the genre, but its manga did win a couple of awards and there were some controversies off-screen too.

I had MAL viewership numbers in mind, rather than its notoriety in Japan. As far as I know, there isn't an official English translation of the manga, and the fan scanlation is far behind. Perhaps "obscure" is a poor word choice - "less popular"?

Yeah, I don't check MAL that much but I can understand why it might be lesser known or liked outside Japan. I just can't help but mention the controversies because it caused quite a stir back then. :)
