GR00T: Jeebus, man, he's been out of gaming for a number of years. Might want to ease him into the truly horrifying.
Oh? I'm intreagued... I want the utlimate horror gaming experience - tell me where it's at!

Edit: ah ok just looked it up - it does look... interesting although I think the only horror experienced will by my missus if she walks past when I'm playing it!

Breja: Condemned is one of the very few, if not really the only horror game I ever enjoyed. I'm not a fan of being scared while playing, I play games to relax and have fun, but this one was really good. It felt just right, spooky and scary but not to the point where playing was no longer fun, and all round well designed.
Is that the one about serial killers, on Steam?

That looks awesome. I might need to snag that myself.

Geralt_of_Rivia: If you think about expanding that collection let me recommend The Last Door, which is actually a pretty new game even if it looks like an old 8 bit adventure but despite that has atmosphere in spades and Waxworks, which is an actual 25 year old classic that everyone with a liking for horror should have played.
Awesome, thanks for those - I'll check them out.

Exactly! The horror... the horror...

Yeah, it's the one where you play the FBI agent gathering evidence, doing lot's of detective stuff... and a lot of melee combat (in first person). And both aspects are quite well done, which would be a rare thing for even one of those, but both at once is very impressive.
From those you have installed, start with the Penumbra series. It has a similar feel like Amnesia The Dark Descent.
A Machine for Pigs, however, falls short IMO.

A game missing from your list is F.E.A.R. - get it and learn to be afraid of little girls in red.
Condemned: Criminal Oranges is a great horror game with some intense moments.

Pathologic is a weird game, like really weird :D definitely worth checking out.
Also, a bit of pointless trivia but I believe Condemned and FEAR are intended to be part of the same setting.

Yeah I completed all 3 F.E.A.R games last year. The first is in my top 5 favourite games ever - such a great FPS and horror game. Loved every second of it.

I heard machine for pigs fell short however even if the gameplay isn't great or not that scary, I'd be interested in it anyway if it's got some messed up shit in it...?
Anything made by Frictional Games is a guaranteed spookathon.
Also F.E.A.R. is amazing.

Another not seen mentioned so far, is Among the Sleep. Played through the eyes of a very young kid, it's good game.
Post Mortem isn't really a horror game, so I'm not sure why it's on your list. Sure, it has good noir-like atmosphere but nothing explicitly associated with horror.

And there is one one game that is missing from your list - Blood. Technically it falls out of your time frame, but so does Alone in the Dark, so I'm mentioning it just in case. It's old, a "little" cheesy and has somewhat schizophrenic scary/funny atmosphere. But it's one of the best shooters from the nineties and with its countless references it's a love letter to any horror fan.

Never heard of that one either - thanks!

I loved Penumbra Overture, until that miserable instant death steam vent puzzle killed it for me.

I'd go with Layers of Fear.
I love love love Alone in the Dark, but it's also pretty dang old, so keep that in mind. 2 is more action, they didn't quite realise they'd jumpstarted a genre with the first, but 3 is a decent mix of the first two. New Nightmare is slightly different, a bit more Resident Evil than the first game, but it's biggest failing right now is that it's apparently rather buggy and a pain in the ass to get running right. The fifth game (Alone in the Dark 2008) was ass on PC and Xbox 360, but apparently the PS3 version (subtitled Inferno and released later) is a fixed up version that's much, much better, with some people calling it good. The PC and Xbox version never got patched up to Inferno standards though. The latest, Illumination, is a decent Left 4 Dead knock off. It's not awful (any more at least, they released a patch that greatly improved it), but it's also not particularly good either. You can skip those two, really (but find a download for 2008's soundtrack, it's amazing).

I highly recommend Condemned: Criminal Origins. It's basically the companion piece to FEAR 1. I haven't played the Obscure games, but everything I've heard is that Obscure 2 is absolute garbage and you shouldn't bother. I liked DreadOut, but there was a big patch that broke save compatibility while also fixing some of the biggest problems most people had with it, and I haven't gotten back to it.

Avoid Walden and the Werewolf, I watched a video on it and it's super bad.

Edit: I goddamn love Blood, it's a classic FPS, think Duke Nukem but instead of sci-fi it's B-Movie horror. It's rarely scary, but it is a whole lot of fun.

If you've never played Cry of Fear, I'd like to suggest that one. Free on Steam.
