Hey Everyone,

I haven't seen any new movie releases recently and was wondering if there was an announcement that I missed about movies on GOG.

I always felt that the movies here were a little bit of the odd man out and don't feel a great loss if GOG drops the movie section. I would just like some clarity moving forward.

Didn't GOG put the movies on hold since they weren't selling well?

Though to be honest, I wish GOG would focus on more full version games...
While movies have effectively been on hold for a while, there has been no announcement from the powers that be. Getting rid of the section altogether would be admitting defeat. The SUBMIT YOUR MOVIE link is still at the bottom of the website. It could be that they've been holding back releases and are planning an epic relaunch with a plethora of big-time films and television shows. Going that direction would require regional restrictions from the point of sale (not point of use once owned so #NoDRM) though.

I wish you are right - except the regional restriction - that would suck.
GOG representatives have said that a number of big film studios are open to offering their movies DRM-free, just not completely region-free, not because they don't want to but because they're bound by preexisting international distribution agreements. GOG would have to make deals not only with the studios but all of their distribution partners in every region worldwide to be fully region-free. It could be the delay has to do with them trying to secure as many regions as possible for as many big films as possible before they relaunch.

GOG has released games that have been restricted from the point of sale in certain countries or regions, so it wouldn't be unprecedented for them to go that way with movies and television.

same
i have zero interest in movies from gog
the line up is dire and so far they havent been able to court any major studio ( or any of the minors outside of indie video game sbased ones it seems )

they might as well give that whole charade up and go back to what they are good at and best known for : games
Those not interested or even against the movie section should consider that the additional revenue gained will help GOG expand so they can bring more game releases here. It's a win-win for everyone.

what additional revenue ?
they are on hold because they werent selling well
and the licenses are not cheap

so i ask you
what additional revenue ?
I imagine there would be an uptick in the movie section revenue if they started selling Star Wars, Star Trek, Indiana Jones, Marvel, Pixar, DC, The Lord Of The Rings, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, Planet Of The Apes, Alien, The Matrix, The Hunger Games, Mission: Impossible, James Bond, et cetera. ;)

lisences for those are not cheap and the studios wil have a heart attack if gog so much as approaches them with the words drm free

and netflix a much larger much older streaming company still doesnt have world wilde licensing contracts to show star wars indiana jones the hobbit etc so i doubt gog wil be able to make much of a dent

( notice world wide my netflix does NOT have star wars the hobbit james bond indiana jones of any sort of star trek other then 9 it does however have doctor who ( for now ) pirates of the carribean lotr several disney movies and several marvel movies )

as far as i am concerned gog's funds and rescources are limited and best spend on what they are good at : games

hypothetical revenues with hypothetical movies are still just hypothetical
Again, worldwide is very unlikely with the "big" films, but they could try for as much coverage as possible, with success hopefully allowing more expansion over time. Your point about the cost of licenses for each of the films isn't relevant for GOG. As far as I'm aware, that's something a streaming service like Netflix would worry about not an outright seller. GOG would only need to provide the agreed upon cut to the studios or regional distributors.

Marcin Iwiński and Piotr Karwowski discussed the challenges of releasing big Hollywood films DRM-free on GOG. Basically, it's doable with some regional restrictions. Start the video at 29 minutes and 14 seconds in.

Whether GOG still have future plans for films or not, I can say with confidence that movies are certainly not their focus for the time being. Not only haven't they released a single movie for a long time, but they haven't even bothered to restore the streaming feature that was removed with the introduction of the new account system.

Only bought one movie on GOG 'Austin hight' I think that was the name of it. Was going to watch it tonight. But too much football [soccer] to watch. and too much cider......
