tfishell: this isn't anything new.
It's new insomuch as when HZD came out on GOG, it gave most GOG users the impression that GOG and Sony would now have a relationship similar to GOG and THQ Nordic's relationship, wherein all of Sony's PC releases get released on GOG.

But instead, Sony is apparently going in the opposite direction and taking after Capcom and pretending like GOG doesn't exist going forward.

So whilst that path by Sony is consistent with GOG's history of never having a good selection of premium games and/or newish premium games, it is still an example of massive new hopes that were created, only to be massively dashed, thus leaving GOG customers newly deflated.

EverNightX: It's always possible. Sony clearly wants more $ than from PlayStation alone. And someone needs to fight Microsoft's take over the gaming world gamepass strategy.

It will be interesting to see what they do with Elder Scrolls 6. Perhaps they will be bold enough to make it a MS store exclusive by that time.
Sony does have PS Plus (although its not available for computers yet but given Playstation PC probably eventually), Ubisoft+, and EA Pass.

The Gamepass model is probably how we will experience games in the future. Im very confident that future Fallout/Elder Scrolls, Call of Duty, etc. games will be Xbox exclusive or why would Microsoft bother to spend so much money acquiring those studios. Then again, Microsoft is getting less platform dependent so we may see a future where Gamepass will be available for Playstation and Xbox just doesnt exist anymore.

If that happens I want a new Sega or NEC console in their place, with the latter having all the old Hudson Soft employees poached back by NEC. The PC Engine and Sega Saturn might be the two consoles that shock with what they kept managing to pull off, esp. the former with Sapphire.
Sad thing about MS is they did make good things in house like "Phantom Dust", "Quantum Redshift" and "Every Party".

Im really hesitant on Sega to be honest. They have fallen from grace and honestly, apart from the Yakuza series, I find their games to be quite middling. I do think more console competition is nice and it would be nice to see another company apart from Nintendo actually try to be innovative with the controls and interface of video games rather than just make consoles plug and play PCs which is what Sony and Microsoft are doing. Its also always possible for Sega to make a comeback like Capcom though and the dreamcast was apparently really good.

You can track when Sega largely fell and its largely when Sammy bought them out. The last game made before this was "Dodoro". Sammy's advice to Sega after they bought them out was to focus on the arcade market which was dying off at the time massively.
Sega can come back but they need to rehire Suzuki, Naka and Mizuguchi. It is a bad take when almost all the old guard at many of these Japanese companoes have been let go or wanted to leave, including Sakaguchi and Kojima-san. I don't CARE about it being a cultural thing that if someone screws up once big time you don't fire them you just place them somewhere that is so unimportant and awful you passively bully someone into leaving. Nonsense like this is why "Final Fantasy" isn't as good as it use to be with Final Fantasy X and before. This is why many people haven't been happy with what Square has made until Octopath Traveller. I won't call them the merged name because Square has largely been in charge because nothing I see outside of DQ and SO resembles an Enix game in any way and now it seems Tri-Ace is facing bankruptcy.
On the opposite side Sony gutted their Japanese division which had my favorite game series "Gravity Rush". Innovative gameplay? Check. Good artstyle? Check. Interesting story? Check. Before this it was "Folklore" and trailing after this was likely "Cursed Mountain" and "Madworld". I like for this stuff to challenge me and after Sega was gone essentially nothing did this. Oh sure I'll like a game but won't LOVE it...Sega had "Segagaga", Panzer Dragoon, Illbleed, Clockwork Knight, Nights, JSR, Skies, etc. Sure some Indie games do Arthouse like Sega but they won't have the budget to truly make it complete. Since Sony's Japanese division is gone I have 0 faith that there will be even ONE game I love in the PS5/Series X gen.
Yeah I'd take those people being hired back at Sega and pushing their arcade division because arcades will come back. The live service crap is going to start bombing more and soon arcades will come back. You want a more steady stream of income sell arcade machines or get into leasing them. Frankly this is what should be done with Tekken, DOA and SoulCalibur. I am honestly worn out that Namco thinks we should shoulder the entire cost of development of new characters in pack after pack, never getting a complete edition of the game for consoles. I also think other fighting gamers are as well...it doesn't matter that home consoles CAN do them perfectly well, it matters that the arcade was largely subsidizing the dev. cost and most gamers can't or won't pay for arcade quality joysticks. Sega doesn't even have to just focus on VF as there are plenty of racers and gun games they made for the arcade as well as other genres that fit the models that D&B and others largely have.
edit: The arcade division back is a start for Sega then they can come back on the console front with enough money. Bringing back sports before this with a full game would be huge too as long as it had good gameplay...this gambling so you can play a full team with beloved players in main or fantasy is ridiculous.
Seriously though the arcade division is a sitting duck with the "quality" of what Cheap Thrills puts out. Compare their new Cruisin' which nickels and dimes you with fewer tracks and non-Outrun style(pure timer) compared to before and they didn't really change much. That's likely their best game even. The games are largely not fun in my opinion regardless of how bad most of their games look and they just rely on IP licensed games. -_-

Damn, super informative and a thing I do see with Japanese companies and a big reason why some of my favorites are dying.

I didnt know about Sega but yeah, they just havent been the same. Arcades arnt dead in Japan but COVID did a big number on them with big arcades in Akihabara closing up so I wonder how Sega is dealing since they were hurting.

Also completely agree that Square lost its touch after Spirits Within was a major flop and Sakaguchi took responsibility and stepped down aka left the company. Spirits Within was a boring movie but had a huge impact on CGI and the gaming industry in showing what can be done. The film was made in 2001 and still looks great. Sakaguchi was the lifeblood of Final Fantasy and the series has lost its way, going for a more action-focused route with the idea that people dont like RPGs anymore. Doesnt help that the new CEO isnt a creative like Sakaguchi but a finance guy.

Gravity Rush was great but didnt really like it on the big screen. Was fun on vita but 2 on the big screen gave me motion sickness (although that could be age). Japan Studio did do great stuff and I dont think Team Asobi has been doing as good a job although it is still early for them. I dont like the path Sony is going down and do hope they course correct.

i don't care for lists made by internet jackals... it means squat.
is there absolute proof the epic store version is "100% drm-free"?

i don't do epic, just because i do not want another store in my life, not "political" reasons.
but if you can prove that if i buy from epic the game can be;
1.) downloaded fully (60+gb or so) as single exe or zip/etc or even steam-like "lose" format (ie: pre-installed)
and..
2.) that "file/install" (before run even once) taken to an offline pc (say, via usb stick) that has no internet and never ever will (or even any networking), and/or the epic client - which even if it has some offline mode, i assume would require internet for installing / use / signing in.
..
can be installed and played from start to finish (like gog offline installers as an example - minus the few dozen MP+ games that require internet for the MP part - just to shut the haters up on a "technicality")
then i will agree and buy it instantly.

however, without actually knowing the above for sure (and i can test it i guess) i assume there is not a TRUE drm-free version on epic, because... BECAUSE... surely that would be floating around on the high seas as the "best" version. i had a quick look before (and yes, i got it on steam, and would obviously insta grab it on gog too) and the ONLY version available is one that is "fixed" by a group. why would they not also release a drm-free version if there was one, for such a big/good game. so to me, since i never saw the "epic" (supposed drm-free) version floating "around", i assume it is indeed NOT drm-free.

i'm not here to argue, but oh boy, if i was not aware that days gone (and more looking at that list) is available truly drm-free i'm gonna jump on the epic store so fast, my own dick will be a meal.

tl;dr
after i make this post, i will begin my own "research" about epic. if they truly have drm-free major games, then, i will hug and embrace epic and spend even 2k+ USD in the next few days grabbing several full priced aa/aaa games without even waiting for a sale.

also if anyone here knows about this topic in detail, do advise. iirc doesn't gog have some epic store integration? i can use gog wallet to buy from epic? is that possible? not that it matters, just that that would make it even quicker, i assume.

and if i am proven wrong, and i hope to ALMIGHTY GOD, that i am, i will like the dick served chilled with dijon mustard, hot corn and asparagus on the side.

edit;;;
oh, and another thing.. if so many good major games ARE drm-free on epic (just going down list - at Detroit: Become Human atm) then there is no real reason why they would not be on gog. so to me that also shows (for now) that they are NOT truly drm free. i can "understand" a major game that has denuvo or other drm, not on gog, for "obvious" reasons. but if there are proper drm-free major games (days gone / detroit:bh to name just two - so far) at other stores and not gog, it makes no sense. the somewhat valid reason of: "if on gog easy to pirate" no longer holds ANY truth. so this too, to me, at this stage, proves that list is b/s. it has to be...

..but we shall see... gonna create an epic account and test for myself... i'll know for sure.

in time, i will either come back with my results and an appetite, or some gog gifting to be done to celebrate something that could be an amazing discovery... no way this will turn out that good - for me. no way!!!

it's 100% DRM free on epic. I bought the game back it up, and tested it on multiple PC without an issue.

I do think all the Playstation PC games on Epic are DRM-free, at least for now.

The Epic launcher doesnt have any innate DRM like Steam and Playstation as of now has not put DRM on their games.
If they're DRM-free on Epic, they aren't here because GOG's marketshare is too small / not enough money to be made here?

Then what does this "Requires Epic Games account" crap mean that started to appear so often in the free releases on EGS that I eventually simply stopped checking up if there was anything I might wish to redeem just in case this or that actually DRM-free game never ends up released on GOG?

Fireflower is a DRM free site. There are many more games sold on gOg than on Fireflower. This means that gOg cannot be a DRM free site, beacuse then the games would be on Fireflower as well
