I remember the long hours spent on this game, leveling up, getting lost (those damn teleporters) and hunting the different demons, all in order to fill in the "additional information" that describes the monsters, some of them were even buggy and the text never appeared, but that's another story.

Seriously, what I wouldn't give to be able to play it again, but as I'm under Windows 10 in 64 bits, at startup I get a stupid error because of a missing file "dwsw32.dll" which is strangely not found on the internet...

I still have the beta version 0.98 on my hard disk, the only real 2d version and not the 3d version that I hate.

Try DGVoodoo2 or some other DirectX wrapper, or run it in VirtualBox with Windows XP. There's no quick and easy way to get old Windows games to run under Windows 10.

And don't go looking for dll files on the internet if you don't know what you're doing. (it's probably part of an old DirectX version)
I remember playing one of the Mordor games and having issues trying to get my characters strong enough. Go too far you can fall to a different floor or just get killed, stay too close and it takes forever to do anything. I don't know...

Though i did like the leveling system where you could take the 'everyman' class (though had a different name) and gain all your stats/abilities up a bit, but when you changed classes you leveled and only gained improvements when you surpassed your previous limits.

Has someone meanwhile found a way to run M2 v0.98 on a Win10 PC without using a virtual machine? It sounds odd that a missing dwsw32.dll should present an unsurmountable problem, and that the dll can't even be found (there is one link to a dll with this name, but I don't think it's the one M2 is looking for). Does anybody know what purpose the dll serves, and if there is a workaround?
By the way, Decklin's Domain doesn't seem to offer M2 v0.98, only v0.99x, which is something different. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I installed v0.992, and I can at least run it - but it's closer to the newer Demise games. The installation folder doesn't contain dwsw32.dll, but the installation may have changed something for 0.98, too (I haven't fully investigated the change): When I launch M2 v0.98, I get a new error message: "Error method '~' of object '~' failed' occured in MAZEMOD:mdrmazConfigureDCs", then I can start the game, create a character, run it, even enter the dungeon - but the dungeon window displays no graphics. I can walk around, leave the dungeon again, but I'm totally blind. The store and the other central places seem to work.
Does this ring a bell for someone?

EDIT:
Looks like I've found a workaround! At first I uninstalled everything related with M2 from my PC. Then I installed the demo version of M2 v098. Running it produced the "dws.. missing" message. Then I installed the M2 v0992 demo, and launched M2 again. And this time it worked!
I guess the explanation is that M2 v0992 contains everything missing for M2 v098. 0992 does add dll's to system32 (which you better leave there when you uninstall 0992).
It may or may not be important: I'm using OTVDM to run M1. The installation of OTVDM seems to have configured my PC in a way that it runs "some" exe's via OTVDM (possibly if they have problems to be executed in the normal fashion?). The two M2 setup exe's were executed via OTVDM. If this contributed to my success, I don't know. M2 v098 itself apperars to run without OTVDM.

It could be part of this 3rd party multiplayer client: https://www.shouldiremoveit.com/zMUD-92738-program.aspx
But I'm not sure...

Thanks for your reply. I have updated my earlier post meanwhile describing a workaround, which lets me play M2 v 098 now. You can't access the HLP file in this way, but this is a minor issue (and there are ways to resolve it).

low rated
no i dont
Further to my earlier message: Otvdm seems to be a requirement for running the M2 setups - without, Win10 tells me that it can't run them. M2 itself runs without Otvdm. When using Otvdm make sure you pick up a recent build (I used 2092). At first I used an older one which didn't work for the setups.

Thanks for your answer, I found where the problem came from, in fact it was necessary to launch the installer (via an emulator) and all the dlls will be correctly put in the system.

Someone put the two versions of Mordor 2, there is the 2d version and then the 3d version (which I hate but it's a personal opinion).

Here is the link, it also contains the patch to have access to all floors:

Warning: the exe that is used to install this patch makes some Anti-Virus like Kaspersky nervous and they consider it as a virus or a bullshit in the genre... personally I think that it is a false positive.

https://www.betaarchive.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=26766[/b[/url]]

The installer for the 2d version is here:

https://www.mediafire.com/file/f6j97byc3djdj79/M2_v0.98b.zip/file

I ran this installer under an emulator: PCemWIN98SE and everything works perfectly.

For Otvdm, I knew this very practical software during a research on the forum of Spiderweb Software, it was used to launch Exile 1 and each time I had to modify my screen resolution and that became quickly painful, to be frank I do not use it any more because PCem is much more practical especially with its customizable resolution.

Well, try the link in my post ;)

If you like the old "Dunjeon Crawler" type rpg I think you could enjoy the game, but after all and it must be admitted, using an emulator to launch it is not pleasant.

Are you saying that installing M2 v098 alone worked for you? Perhaps I'll have a look at PCEM - using OTVDM I had to install M2 v0992, too. But perhaps I made a mistake.

Using an emulator (or VM) to run software may not be to everyone's liking, but if you have to choose between this and not being able to use the software at all, then you have to decide ... And using a frontend like GOG Galaxy or Steam is not much different (they add another layer of complexity).
At least for DOSBOX, DOSBOXWIN and OTVDM (the ones I'm familiar with), it is possible to launch games in a command mode fashion, that is you can launch them by double-clicking an icon on your desktop (essentially, you launch the emulator and add the game exe to the launch command).
I came across OTVDM last year, when Steam launched an OTVDM-based version of Space Empires 2, and I'm using it also to run Stars!, Exile and other 16bit Windows games. I had a quick look at PCEM recently, but gave up when I read about BIOS ROMs, operating systems, etc., which you have to install alongside with PCEM (which makes it a VM-type software). If PCEMWIN98SE has all this stuff preconfigured, it might become "digestible" for me (I'm a lazy person).

Mordor 2 is an incomplete game which was never published. There are two different fully playable beta demo versions (limited number of dungeon levels) available: M2 v098 (called "2d" above), which is an evolution of M1, and I think most traditional Mordor players prefer this one. And there is M2 v0992 (called "3d" above,), which was an attempt to convert the dungeons to 3d by a different developer. After a short intermezzo ("M2 Infinite Worlds"), M2 development continued under the new name "Demise" ("Rise of Ku'Tan", "Ascension"), based on M2 v0992, the 2d version was abandoned. Demise is available on Decklin's Domain (an earlier post contains a link), and you can also download the old M2 3d demo beta from there.
