Hello all,

I recently got a new Alienware laptop and decided to get what upgrades I could since I bought my last laptop around 2003. This came with a UHD moniter, which I figured would compliment the rest of the system nicely. The native resolution is around 3920x1960.

I didnt consider this may cause significant problems with most games since they arent meant to run in a resolution so high. Most games the text is so small I need a magnifying glass to read any text. In King Arthur the TW type RTS, the text is all jumbled and half off the screen. In many games, such as Sins of a Solar Empire, I have to force it to use the hardware mouse cursor or the mouse cursor will be invisible. Im finding that easily half my games are unplayable, even new games. Men of War is my current unresolved issue, I cant see the mouse at all and I cant find a way to force the hardware cursor. GoG support said my only option is to lower the dpi setting to 100% from 250%, but this makes it impossible to read anything in the rest of the desktop, is a pain to have to mess with it every time I run and close Men of War, and I havent tried it yet because Ive been looking for another way to fix it.

Im hoping one of you has had a similar issue and had better luck finding a general way of dealing with it. I see a lot of info that using windowed mode is one possible general fix, but I just cant stand windowed mode. Its such a shame I got this upgraded moniter to have the latest hardware and best looking graphics, but it ends up either stopping me from playing half my games or more, or I have to play in windowed and cant see the tiny text or half the tiny objects in game.

If anyone has dealt with this and has a fix, or anyone just has a better way of dealing with this Im not aware of, I would greatly appreciate any suggestions. I was particularly excited to finally try out Men of War and I cant get passed the title screen.

Thanks!
Set lower (non-native) resolution for the title. In games, set their maximum resolution and tick fullscreen.
I was going to suggest the same as Lin545 above. Have you tried going into the video option menu/screen in the games themselves to change the resolution setting to something more acceptable?

Well, for such a high resolution monitor, maybe try using a lower resolution that fits the pixels?

So, your screen is 3920x1960. So if we say let every 2x2 group of pixels be one pixel instead (so effectively doubling the height and width of the pixels) then that would correspond to a resolution of 1960x980, which is more similar to standard HD, and that might allow you to see the text in these games better. Though this is very similar to the DPI suggestion from GOG.
Just to be clear, since resolution terminology can be very messy:
There is no such thing as 3920x1960.
UHD-1 is a type of "4K", with a resolution of 3840x2160. So, exactly four times the resolution of Full HD (1920x1080), which is more or less the standard for games at the moment.

Set your games' resolution to 1920x1080. At 25% of the resolution your monitor is capable of, most texts should be rendered in a bigger font, and the games better.

Thanks a lot everybody, I'll give this a shot. Every time I tried to lower the resolution I got a message that I shouldn't go below the native resolution of the monitor. I will give it a shot and see what happens.

Change the resolution in the games' settings, not in Windows.
