I know about Legend of Grimrock, but that game lets you control a whole team, not a single character. I was envisioning something more in the realm of old-school roguelikes, like Rogue.

Vaporum uses a single character, but the combat is in realtime.

Also, Jupiter Hell is supposedly on the way, but that one is third person isometric.

You have me genuinely confused. How is Rogue first person?

Sorry, scratch that ... I just meant that the player should only control a single character (like in Rogue), and should kinda use that genre as its template. Unlike most modern grid movement RPGs that aims hard to pay homage to vintage "3D" dungeocrawlers like Wizardry.
So you mean mechanically modern rather than scooting though corridors, got it.
Yeah, not sure what Rogue has to do with turn-based first person dungeon crawlers... I assume by "modern" you mean reasonably recent releases?

Starcrawlers is a solid pick. Fun game, albeit took me a while to get used to its... "wackiness," I guess is a good term. Light-hearted sci-fi dungeoncrawling with great combat system and good progression. Definitely recommend.

There's also the recent remake of Xulima. While exploration is in overhead view, combat is turn-based first person. Fantasy, solid gameplay.

Elminage Gothicis also reasonably recent, but I never could get into it. Much prefer Stranger of Sword City (alas, not available on GOG). A lot of die-hard crawlers swear by Elminage, though, so perhaps you'll like it too. Fantasy, with a lot of mechanics to study.

Eh, that's about all that comes to my mind from GOG's selection. There might be a few other notable titles around, but "first-person turn-based dungeoncrawl" isn't exactly a big scene.

Edit: Heh, ninja'd by your elaboration. Alas, none of the games above are "single-controllable-character," though you could try it (apparently single-character munchkins are possible in Elminage, though require a lot of foreknowledge and cheesing).

Also, as a heads-up - Legend of Grimrock is also real-time combat. Really bummed me out with it, as much as I tried I did not like it at all.

A couple years ago TB was complaining about this, the overusage of 'rogue-like' in games, and those are more just some elements of rogue-like. So permadeath, carry-over progress, or the most used, random level design.

Wait.. turn based... first person modern.... Heh, SUPERHOT (alright it's not a dungeon crawl but it seems a good match)

Of course! In principle, it's turn-based! :-p

It's a shame Elminage Original didn't come here. I have that on both PSV and 3DS and find it to be more streamlined and easier to keep track of than Elminage Gothic.

I'd love to buy it again on PC, but not at the cost of picking it up on Steam, they already got me with Stranger of Sword City, Ray Gigant, Mind Zero (with its complete lack of controller support and terrible keyboard controls), and Operation Abyss/Babel and that's more than enough support for The Evil Empire of the Dread Lord GabeN.
Check out "7 Mages" on Steam. It's good solid dungeon crawler. I don't regret purchasing it one bit. Don't bother asking for it here on GOG, though. GOG turned it down.
Is Vaporum an option? Also, Menzoberranzan.

Looks party-based as well. Mixed reviews...

But turn-based, and below the cost of a cheap Starbucks coffee right now. Thanks, might pick this up.

I'm pretty sure you can play with one character in the Legend of Grimrock games.

Remake? What remake? That game was new in 2014, not a remake of an old game or a new game set in a pre-existing universe like the Forgotten Realms.

For whatever reason I thought it was based on an older title from the 90s.

My bad :(
Try "the Quest" on Steam
