I got the humble bundle and gave Minecraft Story Mode to my son. His PC is running Linux Mint 18.1.

It's been a long while since I configured a game on LInux using Wine and I can't seem to get this one working. I was wondering if anyone else has. WineHQ states they got it working, so I'm sure I'm doing something wrong.

PlayOnLinux is my crutch. I use it to configure everything.

So what I did was search for Minecraft: Story Mode. It wasn't on the list.

Then I installed Steam on PlayOnLinux and then downloaded MC:SM using Steam.

When I try to run it, I get a big white box that doesn't go away unless I close Steam. And a little window with the title "Error", but the window never shows up. I just see it in my task bar.

I've tried 32-bit and 64-bit and a few different versions of Wine. I tried getting the dx10 installer put on. And that's the point I gave up.

I probably am missing a dependency or something goofy, but I can't remember some of the classic ones to get. If anyone has any insight, let me know. The googles asnd bings of the world have yet to reveal their secrets.

Thanks!
This title will run beautifully in wine, you might have to install directx9. Looks like wine 1.7.50 or newer should work well. I did it through vanilla wine, 32-bit prefix but playonlinux should be able to replicate the setup.

If you need a front end for Linux, why not try out Lutris? They have an installer for Minecraft Story Mode as well..

Do let me know your experience with it as I have yet to use it myself :)

No luck. It looked like it installed Steam somewhere, but then got hung up. Found this on the terminal:

I think I'll try doing it with PlayOnLinux again and just start downloading libraries like crazy. :)

The installer is most likely using an old version of Wine hence the reason you have that Steam crash. Use Wine 2.13 or Wine Staging 2.13.

Oops! I think you meant: "Use Wine [stable] 2.0.2 or Wine staging 2.13."

I had to go to Wine, click on the 2.13 [staging] version (which didn't check it), click OK, refresh, then I could select 2.13 [staging] for Wine and Steam (Wine version).

Overall, not too difficult, but not exactly super-easy or intuitive. But I got it.

It's gone further than before. It's actually downloading. Yay! I'll let you know how it plays.

Thanks guys!
I finished the install. Still not working in mostly the same way. Big white screen. But this time, I saw something about Direct3D. At least that's a direction for me to work on. For now, I'm done trouble shooting tonight. Thanks for the help!
