Trine and other gems from Frozenbyte

We managed to survive half of the week so far. To get through the rest of the week before another weekend full of gaming joy awaits, we prepared something magical:

The one-of-a-kind adventures in the Trine series (up to -85%)!
Combining side-scrolling, action, platforming and puzzle-solving gameplay elements, the beloved series really has something in store for everyone. You control three different characters, each with their own unique abilities, and have to combine their strengths to overcome all challenges ahead of you.

Also, we have another no less magical highlight with Nine Parchments (-75%) in the lineup. The action-heavy, spell-weaving RPG offers some of the best co-op experience we came across recently.
Other Frozenbyte games on sale include Shadowgrounds (-85%), Shadwen (-75%) and Shadowgrounds Survivor (-85%).

The Midweek Sale ends July 6th, 10 PM UTC.

tinyE: How is Shadwen?
I enjoyed playing it.
I took me some time to get used to the "shoot grapplehook and swing" - mechanic.
And I found the "the time only flows, if you actively do something" - mechanic pretty interesting.

However - the ending sucked.

I was so disappointed from my chosen ending, that I replayed the last missions, only to see the second ending - and that sucked, too.

So, I would say: the game as such can be pretty enjoyable, once you got used to the mechanics,....just don't expect to get a satisfactory ending to the story.

If you can live with that - get it.
low rated
To those who like scifi/top down shooters/aliens the Shadowgrounds Games are very good(imo).

And the price is very reasonable to say the least.

RoboPond: The Trine series has some of the most beautiful backgrounds ever. And its also pretty good.

Matewis: It really has, and to top it off the music is phenomenal as well, e.g. (link)
Not Dragon Graveyard? It's even better in the game. I think about it and my SOUL is SOARING.

Also, Forsaken Dungeon is great (all Trine songs are), but this particular motif is liquid awesome.

Wait, wait, wait... 10th anniversary? Seriously? Damn I feel old now. And ten years later even the first game is still absolutely gorgeous. It's a pity they dropped the ball so hard with the third one.
I was hoping we'd see trine 4 announced on GOG for this 10 year anniversary. :(

It's always fascinating to me by how much tastes can differ. I played through Trine 1 and 2, and Searock Castle is by far my favorite musical piece, which is why I linked it. The two you linked are great as well, as is the almost the entire Trine soundtrack, but to me at least Searock is far better :)

I'm looking forward to what Trine 3 has to offer someday, when I finally get round to it :P Hopefully they kept the strong soundtrack condition going with it as well

1/3 of a ruinously dumbed down game. Still pretty though.

Crisco1492: And yoink! If you keep up the sales, my wishlist might go down to under 100 in the near future.
My wishlist did finally drop down to a single page listing after the summer sale.

darktjm: Be wary of Trine 2 & 3 for Linux. On my system, both Linux version crash on startup and the Windows versions barely work on wine. Disclaimer: my system doesn't meet the system requirements for any game I won: I don't run Ubuntu and I don't run Windows.
You're thinking that your distribution is too different than what the games expect? Because having hardware that is underpowered usually wouldn't cause a crash, of course; normally just a slowdown.

That's a pity, but I'm not entirely surprised. From some gameplay clips it's clear that they changed the gameplay a lot. But seeing as it's Trine, I figure it will be worth it for the graphics and music alone.

For some, perhaps it is, but from what I heard Breja is not exaggerating: supposedly they ran out of funding and ended the game early, and on a cliffhanger at that.

I haven't tried it, that's just my understanding of what others have said.

Some people were of course unhappy that they switched from 2D to 3D, but I'm not sure how much of that is fans disliking change versus how much it's that Frozenbyte really was not so good at the 3D execution as they had been on 2D. Perhaps some of both?

I think I already own it (bought it in a bundle iirc) so I will give it a try nonetheless, especially since unlike the first 2 games it's apparently very short. Which would make sense based on what you're saying.

I'm not sure about the full 3D freedom of motion myself, but it didn't look too bad based on gameplay clips. Very difficult to judge though. True to form at least, the game looks and sounds the part. A big part of why I enjoy Trine is the setting and atmosphere, which seems unique. I can't think of anything else with the same sort of whimsical fantasy setting. It's more the kind of thing you tend to see in movies, I think (eg. Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan)

Right; Frozenbyte's successes have been amazing, and "Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince" is high on my wishlist -- due out this autumn, and returning to 2.5D (clearly the safer business decision even if they *have* gotten great at 3D).

I really love 3D so this is unfortunate in that sense, but on the bright side, I expect great things again

They're also coming out with "Starbase" in 3D, supposedly in 2019, so that may also be very interesting..

Just watched the Trine 4 trailer again 5 minutes because of this discussion :) It certainly looks incredible yet again.

Somehow I missed Starbase completely so thanks for the heads up. Looks very interesting.

That's true for me as well - it's exactly that kind of fairy tale worlds I would love to explore more often in games. The only somewhat similiar settings I can think of is Night of the Rabbit, the new King's Bounty and maybe Book of Unwritten Tales.

And yes, I have to admit - for the graphics and the mood Trine 3 is actually sort of enjoyable. It's just way too simplified, and so obvously unfinished I really felt sort of insulted as a fan of the series. Not only did they release an unifinished game that ends on a cliffhanger (essentially it simply cuts off where they ran out of money), but also they didn't even make any pretense of apologising for that, didn't even try to wrap the game up with a level or two of DLC at a later date... nothing. It really put me off from buying their games. I'll probably pick up Trine 4 eventually - it looks like a return to form - but only once it's nicely discounted.

No, I mean that I am not qualified for support or refund from gog.com, because among other things, there is a requirement that you run one of their approved operating systems. Not that I expect much: of the three tickets I remember opening, one they offered a refund and changed the system requirements to exclude others like me (Divinity: Original Sin EE, which I eventually got running using patches made by others), one was a temporary site slowdown that resolved itselv, and the other they "resolved" by removing the invalid extras (Divinity: Original Sin 2).
