Chris Avellone was upper management at Obsidian though.

Plus it has to be remembered that one of his big stories was about how publishers like MS would not work with Feargus again because he yelled at and was mean to them when they were doing Stormlands together and MS wanted to turn it into some sort of MMO hybrid (which would have been a disaster as that sort of game was not OEI's focus, at all); now MS has bought OEI and Feargus is staying. Whatever the issue was- probably just a disconnect between what MS now wanted and what OEI could realistically deliver- it cannot have been as serious as Chris made out.

Indeed, a lot of Avellone's expose was distinctly questionable. Saying that people were going to leave after Deadfire shipped is obvious and happens all the time. Indeed, for even a company with only 120 employees and an average employment time of 5 years at the same place- pretty high, I'd suspect- an average of 2 employees will leave, every single month. The fundamental problem with a medium sized company like Obsidian is that employee advancement is very limited since if they have maybe 2 full scale projects then they can only ever have 2 project leads, 2 head writers etc etc, and project length is probably around 3-4 years on average. If you want advancement you either have to be very patient or move jobs.

I'd suspect most of his info was technically correct- people have left OEI in the 6 months after Deadfire and Chris's May of Rage, after all, and I can easily believe there were heated discussions over Stormlands- it's just not as damning or surprising as people made out and a lot of it is revisionism where management was damned if they do, damned if they don't (how do you hold onto talented writers who want promotions when you don't the positions for them? Do you shift Stormlands' focus to MMO like because that is what MS wants even if you have no experience there and think any release would be a disastrous mess if you do? If you had idle head writers and a disastrous Stormlands launch would Chris Avellone use those instead to show how bad management was?).
Fuck.

Though hasn't MS been putting stuff here recently? Time to nab the one's I've been holding off on sooner than later.
Is it fair to assume that these companies will no longer make games that they are passionate about, but instead make games that shareholders will be happy with?

I am getting far too cynical... Hey, maybe Microsoft won't meddle with their work, right? That's possible, right?

:(
Very sad news indeed, i can bear the acquisition of Obsidian (I have never managed to get me like the POE rpg style but i gues it's just me) but the acquisition of inxile entertainment got me by surprise, despite their faults i still like their games and I'm still missing a couple of titles I'm interested in ... guess I will have something to buy in the christmas sales this year, i hope gog will notify us with a bit of advance when/if their titles get removed ( long dark anyone?).

It might happen.
I've had confirmation from one of the recent Acquisitions that they intend to keep supporting GoG. Whether they've overestimated the degree of autonomy they'll have is to be seen.

What InXile? It's not a big loss, even though I like BT4.
Pillars of Microsoft - Deadlinux DLC coming in 2019...

I don't care about inXile, but Obsidian... Still very bad news for everyone. Is not good when big companies buy small companies. It eliminates competition, and makes everything stagnate...

4.25 Xbox exlusives confirmed - well almost confirmed.

Sotomonte: Well, RIP Obsidian and RIP InXile

But in the horizon there are many new "classic" CRPGs to come from other new developers:

- Black Geyser: Couriers of Darkness
- The Waylanders
- Realms Beyond: Ashes of the Fallen
- etc.

Un saludo.
These are pretty much all cash grabs using the same business approach as PoE. Guaranteed they will come out with AT LEAST 3 editions each and DLC soon after.

See from 4:18 for the context:

"Some of the teams are going to have games that will come out soon and have some things in the works, but mostly we feel really set up to give our fans new exclusive games for Xbox and a great pipeline of new things going into Game Pass".

Exclusive games for Xbox, and worse than DRM "game streaming" (Game Pass). They don't even hide that it's their main intention behind buying these studios. Disgusting.

He means exclusives in the same way they have meant for the past 3 years...Xbox console exclusives that are not on PS4. Still on PC though, because they have 2 platforms. For a person that games on a console they are Xbox exclusives all the way, despite being on PC. State of Decay 2, Forza 7, Horizon 3 and 4, Gears 5, Ori, Cuphead are all Xbox console exclusive that are on PC and that is what he meant. Interpret any way you like though, you will see in future I'm right.

Gamepass is not streaming. It's rental where you download the entire regular game. PS Now on PS4 is streaming and they've been doing it over 3 years, see the diff? You don't think people should be allowed to rent games? Fair enough.

I don't think games should be rental only. That's DRM on steroids.

Not for Linux either I assume? I.e. MS exclusives. It's only marginally better, unless their Windows versions will be DRM-free.

They are not rental only, you can buy them. If people want to rent a game for a fraction of the cost, they can.

Linux people have a right to be concerned. But to me the platform is the x86 PC with choice of your OS, so yes Linux people are not going to fare well in this. But GOG and Steam are not platforms they are shops. It's great to buy stand alone installers on GOG, but the fight against DRM was lost long ago. It needed to be defeated when Steam began and it wasn't. Everyone is trying to shut the gate now long after the horse ran away.

It's only getting lost when monstrosities like MS buy DRM-free developers like in this case, and then prevent them from releasing DRM-free. Otherwise GOG itself is steadily growing. MS are enemies in this case, not even a neutral party. That's why as DRM-free and Linux user I see this move as hostile.
