Bard's Tale 4 was nice game that suffered from bad design choices. But I enjoyed it anyways.
POE2 was unique iso crpg with pirate theme, POE is decent game.

Ok, this will sound like a dumb question, but is there recent precedent for Microsoft buying a developer, changing everything they do to alienate their fan base, and make them a husk of their former selves? That sounds more like EA.

I do worry about being able to get future games DRM-free. I have less than no interest in the Windows Store.

I would rather settle for steam, but no Windows store games for me either.

Why do I even need to explain anything? I thought it was common knowledge that Obsidian and inxile were dispicable game companies.

Inxile: Pulling low effort cash grabs off old IPs and milking customers with fancy editions. Bards Tale 4, Wasteland 2 and Torment are all garbage games. These games are so bad that I didnt even bother torrenting them.

Obsidian: Made PoE which is a disgrace to the whole RPG genre and objectively bad in pretty much every aspect but the art style. The writing is cringeworthy to say the least. It reminded me of my high school days when teachers would read us some essays written by other students. It even has instances of straight up bad English. PoE 2 and Tyranny are in the same trash tier.

They also made New Vegas which is easily one of the worst Fallout games avail, in the same trash tier as F2.

They made Neverwinter Nights which were both generic and bland single player MMOs

If Microsoft were kind enough to pull these games from GOG, that'd be great.

Not a chance. The games they would buy are already dumbed down to the lowest point, I dont think even EA could beat that.

Although, most of Obs' games have been published by other companies, so those should be safe.

I was repeating what it means to the world, not to me. To me, it means "Personal Computer", and, given that I went from Amiga to Linux (I've never used MS operating systems as anything but a means to launch games), I obviously agree with the first part of your statement. However, you must be living in a different world if you believe that "that particular bit of terminology stupidity" has done anything but become worse in the last decade or so. "PC vs Mac vs Linux" is what I hear all the time, not "Windows vs. MacOS vs. Linux".

RIP inXile and Obsidian, you'll be missed.

So now that those studios have gone down the sewer drain, what other good indie cRPG studios we have left to pick from?

There Larian Studios and Spiderweb Software but both produce like 1 RPG every 3 years or so. What else is there left to look forward to in the western cRPG field?
