Licurg: I wanna get up those ladders :D
I'll come along.

How many goglodytes can you accommodate, Matewis?
avatar
tinyE: Could be worse.

nightcraw1er.488: What did you tell the police when they turned up?
All joking aside, I felt kind of bad taking that picture and then going inside and having some lunch before calling the police.

Hah dear me, I wish I lived in those mountains! The two closest places to stay closeby that are within shooting distance of that trail, and that I know are awesome:
Thendele Camp
Mahai camping site
Thendele is the most comfortable of course, and I was there last year with 2 buddies for a week. It cost me about R3000 (roughly $200).
The chalets have got nice widescreen plasma tvs, so we took along an NES for the rainy days :D What you do is you wait for a morning with absolutely no clouds in the sky, and then you drive to the sentinel base camp, which is a couple hours drive. If the weather is still good, then you can try to reach the ladders, climb them, and head for tugela falls and/or the highest point in SA which is close to the falls.

Alternatively, if you have tents that can handle strong winds, then a group of 10 or more can start early from the base sentinel peak base camp, climb the ladders, and spend a couple of nights on the plato. And if you're really up for it, and this is something I desperately want to do one day, you climb up to the plato, but you start from the bottom of the valley, more than 1km down from the plato. That is about a 5 day trip or so.

Here are some pics from, sadly, the only time I've been up there (it snowed on the last day):

When i saw all these replies i thought you were organizing a charity collection for a new tv :D

Highpoint is further south, Mafadi. :)

Matewis: very pretty place
Attractive! The shapes remind me a bit of the Grand Canyon, except in a mountain form, rather than a valley of sorts.

grimwerk: He needed three stitches. And good news, those stitches only cost $550.00 each. Next time, krazy glue.
$1500 hospital bill !! Glad i'm in Canada, same thing would cost $15 (in hospital parking fees)

First thing I thought of when I saw the thread title. Here it is, for those who don't get the reference...

...even in scripted athletic entertainment, accidents do happen.
The first thought in my mind was something like a Death Metal leaderboard. =)

Yeah, but Mafadi lies in Lesotho :) As far as I know, the highest point in South Africa is Mont-Aux-Sources which is close to the falls and still on the South African side.
They can't be more dangerous than Half-Life ladders.

Matewis. I don't need you to trust me on almost everything I say. But I am, without a doubt, even if not close to the best mountain climber here, definitely the biggest mountain nerd on the GOG forums. Mafadi's on the border and is officially the highest point in SA. Mont-Aux-Sources is even mentioned in the linked article as the often mistaken point.

An even bigger mountain nerd than I, perhaps one of the biggest mountain nerds in the world, compiled this list: http://peakbagger.com/list.aspx?lid=1106

And if others you know also think Mont-Aux-Sources is the hp, share this information! :)

(Also, Mont-Aux-Sources is in Lesotho. But it, too, is on the border so this summit is shared by both countries as well.)

Here's a short trip report for M-A-S that mentions the ladders, but they took an alternate route: http://peakbagger.com/climber/ascent.aspx?aid=236939

Thanks for the info! I looked at google maps again and it indeed does look like Mafadi is pretty much right on the border. And now I feel a little bit sad for Mont-Aux-Sources :P
