darthspudius: I thought someone here might like the chance to replay these oldies. They were added to Steam last night. Looking forward to re-playing Shogun.

I always thought they had been available on Steam right from the start (I don't know because I don't have a Steam account).
Why did they only put those games for sale now? Maybe because they already had Medieval TW 2 and Shogun 2?
Nope, that wasn't the cause.

Shogun: Total War was published by EA until recently, while Medieval: Total War was published by Activision, though they never offered it online. Both games were owned by the respective companies and prolly Sega managed to finally strike a deal and finally add those two to their Total War catalogue.

Yep, my uncle's old copy of Shogun 1 had EA Games (remember that specific EA label?) all over it, at least in North American regions it did.

@karnak1 EA owned Shogun: Total War, while AActivision owned Medieval: Total War. Sega got Creative Assembly later on and the first game in the Sega era was Rome: Total War.

I wonder if this change of publisher had anything to do with the delay/abortion of the "enigmatic hint" mystery game.
Maybe GOG was trying to sell the game through EA and the change cancelled the entire deal.

darthspudius: If you can use the controls of Medieval two you should be fine. Just think of it as a more primitive version. Shogun is a great game, fantastic art style. But in my opinion the sequel improved on it and is the best in the series.
Oh HELL NO!

Shogun 2 had great diplomatic / campaign map stuff but the combat was abysmal.

Medieval 2 was the peak for that!

Doubt it, the old games were published under Sega some years back in a Total War collection pack. I'd say something else either legal or technical was getting in the way.

Damn, I want Medieval TW so bad. Loved that game, best one in my opinion. Glad to see them made digital, to bad its on Steam.

What was wrong with the combat? It was easily my favourite part of the game. Good unit variety and did their job a lot better then the other games.

Probably. My physical copies of Shogun 1 and Medieval 1 would sometimes crash, freeze and have flickering graphics in certain situations on my Windows 7 64 bit PC.

Edit: And an entire mode in Medieval 1 would freeze and wouldn't run at all for me.

Probably. An older copy of Shogun Warlord Edition had more problems than the collection Sega re-release. Still, the Sega re-release would have flickering menus at times if I remember correctly.

Edit: For me at least.
