Honestly, JPEG is very good at compression and 500kB is way more than enough. Now if you're pixel peeping then I can understand you needing that much, but 250kB can give you very good image quality. Even 150kb is more than enough for most images. Go online, websites aren't dishing out huge 1MB images to showcase their products.

That's only 300Kb.

idbeholdME: Downscaling usually brings the quality so low I don't bother uploading it. I now just stick with crops and compression and hope for the best, but pretty often, it's not enough. All depends on how much I can crop.

DrazenCro: I remember you from "Take and post a screenshot...." topic.

Especially when you said "Where are we, stone age?"

Not sure why gog can't add some option that when user upload one image he could upload it up to 2 mb size, but no, having current limit is so cool.

Those 2 mb would be enough for those who upload 4k images, it would be managable to bring it to that size. But having current limit it is really hard, you just need to resize the 4k image, but that is not the way it is suppose to work.

Anyway, for me faststone image viewer works perfectly fine since I am on resolution that doesn't need resizing or sth, I just add some colors to it i.e. a little change in brightness, contrast, saturation and also with it I can see the final save size.

Here is also an example that some 4k image can kinda look good if you resize it, in some way especially if you play with colors a little bit, it looks good on my side but that is maybe because image will fit to my smallish browser size. Everyone up for its taste.

4k

2048x1152 - size just enough for gog limit

Kinda fun... watching it get smaller and smaller, though of course 4k is harder to compress down without things starting to get a bit weird.

One thing I've wondered about, since it isn't documented anywhere: What formats are valid for the uplopping tool?

I agree that the 500kb per limit is silly, but 2 MB per file is plenty. That's enough to cram in a several megapixel file.

PCX? TIFF? SVG? TTF? I'll have to run some asinine tests.

PCX, TIFF, SVG, ICO, WAV, RAW, DAT, RIFF PIK, CUR, OGG, ELF, LOG, EXE, TTF : Nope.

BMP,: Surprisingly, Yes.

The problem is that game screenshots are often saved without proper compression. As a result you have to compress them manually. I use GIMP to do so. It takes time to open the file, choose the appropriate folder, where you want to save the new screenshot and finally export it with proper compression. The current system doesn't favor spontaneous screen sharing.

Valve does indeed a better job with steam, the steam screenshot tool delivers pretty sharp images at very low size. If galaxy would come with a similar feature producing screenshots at max 500 kb most problems would be resolved. There are of course multiple workarounds such as using gimp, or afterburner but all do require some extra work.

Though with most people barely sharing shots i do wonder if the 500kb limit is holding others back or that there is not really a huge interest in sharing screenshots with this public

I think another thing holding people back: None of the games have community hubs; there's a complete lack of inline image posting, and we can't even attack images to reviews.

Screenshot sharing is quite common in this thread:
https://www.gog.com/forum/general/take_and_post_a_screenshot_of_what_youre_playing_right_now. :) The limit is keeping me from posting there frequently. As you noted, the screenshots from Galaxy require a little work to bypass the limit. I'd love to be able to post screenshots directly after taking them.

We'll see pigs fly before we'll see this forum updated to the modern age.

Matewis: Because of this I can downscale and compress images with gimp blindfolded by now...
I use paint.net. Much simpler and quicker solution. No downscaling needed either. Just using the predictive compression size/percentage option. ;)

I used IrfanView's export to web function which lets me specify a target file size... This really is a non-issue as anyone who actually wants to share actually can share... saying "let's be more like steam and require Galaxy to take screenshots" is a little absurd. People could just learn how to use a computer.

Yes, i know, personally i enjoy watching the shots others take ( and sometimes comment on them, if this was facebook i would have probably liked almost everything except shooters ;) ) and share some of my own. I even have the post as favorite next with " What are you playing now "

That was the whole reason i said that a lot of people do not seem to take much interest in sharing pictures, it could also be that i'm used to maybe 'larger' crowds with more people sharing shots from the games they play atm
If I'm taking a full screen game capture, I just press Print Screen, paste the image into Paint.net, crop and resize. You get a preview of the file size before you save.

If I want to batch-resize a bunch of image or a whole folder, I use Image Resizer for Windows

500k is fine for its intended function. This isn't an image hosting site.

I usually use windows screencap function or fraps, and then right click a pic and select edit from the menu, which brings up the image in paint where I can resize it. I then shrink it(and maybe make it a jpg if needed) and post later on.

(also agreed on 500kb often being more than enough.....if I want to show others anything bigger/better I just link to an image hoster off-site)

By the way, did you know there's a hardcoded 2 MB limit for forum avatars, too?

image resizer is a pretty convenient image handler. I either use the quality scaler in percentage, lets say 90% for a 2k shot that is just above the forum limit or use the 1080p preset which often is enough

though i do already use afterburners build in screenshot taker which is already set to a quality % of 90 and saves the image as a jpeg. this results in workable pictures in the 3 to 500k range which seems sensible to use, even for environments such as facebook or discord that do allow multi mb imagery. The image is loaded in a split sec, users with slower connections won't have any trouble with viewing your pictures and it seems to be in line with the average ' green ' approach of the current generations view on a renewable future ;-)

Afterburner only does not always work with older games or some ports. Windows screenshot does seem to be one of the most widest usable features. Windows snip and sketch feature is also a pretty nicely done addon ( shift win s )

In the past i often used nvidia too but ever since enabling nvidia's ingame overlay added 20 to 40% extra powerload on a given game i stopped using it. i belief the extra load these days has become bearable but with the main focus for using screenshots as a means of communication afterburner is more preferred

Well seeing as the avatars are a wee bit small, 2MB seems like enough. Now if forum avatar size were a bit bigger....
