1) How linear is the game? Compared to, say, the first 2 Max Payne games or Shadow Warrior 2013 or Serious Sam 3 which I played recently.

2) Other than the "collectibles" are there any secrets in it?

I just played it on 360. It's about as linear as a game can be. Not only that but all encounters are the canned scripted type...you know fight three waves until done sort of thing.

I don't really recall any secrets, unless you count maybe stashes of ammo around a corner that you don't need to go around...but no official secret areas or anything.
I meant "official" secret areas.

Thanks for the reply.
There are some gold secret weapons if i remember correct.
It was one of the worst games i have played from rockstar , the story makes no sense does not respect the endings of the second game one of the worst games to have multiplayer, makes sense that the studio was wiped out and we don't hear anything about a upcoming sequel for max payne.

film grain " DEAD" is what i remember from this game
well dunno - bought the game in a sale. Played about 10 hours of it in a 3-4 week period . Dunno then swapped to another game and haven't touched it since (for almost a year i guess). Can't say it's a bad game though but dunno not so good that i had the feeling i have to finish it. Regarding linearity - very linear. Good thing about the game (at least for me ^^) if i recall correctly it was quite challenging/ok challenging on highest difficulty.
One of my favorite games, it's some badass matrix commando shit. Not sure why people miss out on it.
Its R*, once one of my favourite publishers and own everything up to and including the utter drm'd hell drivel which is GTA4. Have never brought anything from them since. Seems standards have slipped on all their franchises as MP1 and 2 were excellent games. If you like that type of thing, I really enjoyed StrangleHold game, which has same mechanics, but not as much story, but great fun!

Just one more question then, does finishing the game on highest difficulty give any different endings like in the previous 2 games?

There are.
They're stashed around the levels and I believe that if you get all the gold parts for a gun you get to use a bling version of said weapon. Which is purely cosmetic I think.
It might even be just for the multiplayer portion, I don't know.

I am talking by memory here, but no. There is only one ending, with a minor choice before the cutscene, but this choice doesn't affect the ending in any way (just different achievements and pre-final cutscene). Without entering in spoilers nor details, the ending is very self-conclusive and ties all the plot, so no alternatives.

The game is more linear than the previous ones, but I found the levels to be detailed enough for mild exploring. The game itself encourages this with clues, "hidden" painkillers and golden parts for weapons. It's just more an arcade experience, i.e enter this room, clear it, exit, cutscene and repeat. But you can usually sniff around to a point. Don't expect anything like first game's buffy easter egg though.

If you want to read my opinion, I really enjoyed the game. I was very skeptic when first heard about this game. I waited a long time and bought on a sale. The new narrative, even if lacks the charm of the comics, is interesting enough. The gameplay, even if suffering of nowadays' scripting abuse and "modern gaming sins", is very satisfying and enjoyable. I ended up loving the new setting and storyline too.
The game might not be as important as the first one, but , IMO, still is an above average 3rd Person Shooter and, despite the hate it got, even if inferior, I think it is worthy of the Max Payne name.

You can use them in the campaign too. I recall them being slighty better (expanded magazine I guess), but I ended up disabling the Golden Guns options because I hate the skin.

Just finished it. My biggest gripe:
Way too preachy. The "spoilt rich bastards with their toys waste their money on parties, drugs and alchohol, while the poor suffer and turn to crime because of this" gets repeated again and again and again.
Other than that. This practically sums up my opinion of the game:

Other minor issues:
_No hand grenades in single player campaign???
_Final battle... just meh.
I loved the first two games and their Film Noir and Bullet-time beauty.

Max Payne 3 was a long time coming, and when it did we got something that looked like a game made from the unused assets from the GTA games.
Is there any chance we'll see the Max Payne series on GOG?
