[This is a sticky post, it will be visible in every single page of this thread. It has been published in October 2020.]

Our moderation team decided not to take a side in the discussion since this giveaway thread was created by the community and, as long as there are no forum rules violated, is up to you, dear Gogers, to decide its fate. We will not set giveaway rules, edit the OP's post, nor lock the whole thread.

However, to make it easier for newcomers to understand the situation (about the OP being inactive and other), I will stick my own post right above the first one.

You are, of course, free to create new threads to start anew and make your own, clear rules. At the same time, please stay reasonable when crating them, as multiple new duplicates might make it even more confusing for many Gogers.

That being said, here you can find a post with dxenija's community poll to have better understanding of the situation: CLICK.

At the time of writing, open giveaway threads are:
- Massive Giveaways Blog (this one)
- Free (temporary) keys giveaway central topic.
- Updated Itch.io giveaways

Be nice to each other *flies away*

Braggadar: My bad. I'm not accustomed to Humble Bundle, and not generally a fan of the whole file sharing torrent scene.
Didn't realise they were offering a torrent option.

But it would hake sense that if they're going to remove direct link access to a file in 6 days, the torrent file will become useless as well. The whole point is to offer the game for download for a limited time only. There is a hard deadline advertised.
I assume the game will not be removed from the site entirely; just from the accounts of people who claimed it as a freebie. If this is correct, when the game is removed from our accounts, the tracker will reject our attempts to download the torrent. People who purchased the game will still be able to download it.

EDIT: Upon further inspection, it appears that Humble Bundle does not use account-specific passkeys on a private tracker. Therefore, the only way for them to block access to the torrent is if their tracker is private and the tracker rejects all attempts to connect to it when the game is removed from our accounts. This would mean that everyone who has purchased the game from Humble Bundle would also be prevented from downloading the game through the provided torrent. They may very well have it set up like this. If so, people who have purchased the game would only be able to download the game directly from their browser when the torrent is disabled.

Braggadar: It's not a torrent. It's a 5.9GB DRM-free zip archive, likely containing an executable offline installer.. Which is reusable.

Engerek01: What do you mean? Humble Bundle literally asked me to use torrent when I tried to download the file which is what I am doing right now. It first let me download a torrent file Outcast-7693-DRMFREE.zip.torrent. It took me a few minutes to figure out what to do with it since I haven't used torrent for over 10 years.
Well, in my trial, I go to my HB library, click on the download link and it immediately starts downloading the zip file directly. If you did the same and got a torrent, then perhaps it's an account preference or something.

Which is the same thing they did with the temporary free access to certain trove games a month or so ago. Understood.

Go to the list of purchases in your account, click on Outcast - Second Contact, scroll all the way to the bottom and change "Download Type" from "Direct link" to "BitTorrent", then click "Download".

BenKii: Outcast - Second Contact (DRM-Free) is free today at Humble Store. No Steam Key is given. It will only be available to download DRM-Free for 6 days and then it will vanish from your Humble Library.

It asks you if you want to use the torrent due to the large file size (and issues with downloading to FAT32 formatted drives) for efficiency of downloading the file. There is no actual special purpose to torrents; it is just simply another mirror. It's an option to download what is essentially the same game. The popup window still allows you to direct download the game.

And it says that clearly. Why are you repeating that here? I never said you can't directly download it. Mr/s Braggadar claimed it is not a torrent file and I showed it is.

As it has been said, it is NOT a torrent file. Humble just gives you the OPTION to first download a torrent file to use this one with a torrent client to download the actual file itself which in fact is a zip file as stated.

This is true, of course, but torrents help with checking file integrity.
Browser based downloads can sometimes get cut, and there's not necessarily any way to see whether the file is complete. Torrent checks that automatically. Of course it is possible to download the game file through browser, and then use the torrent file locally to check it - assuming that it's the very same file with both download methods.

Humble Bundle provides checksum for almost all of their files.

It's not a torrent file. Torrents convert files to torrents when you use that option, it still spits out the original. I was explaining the reason for the pop up is not because it is a torrent or anything of importance. It's just the fact it was a large file size and it was by recommendation to use it for the size, considering speed and bandwidth issues.

Here Humble Bundle itself clearly states they are Bittorent files.

And it gives us the option to download the same file via torrent.

Engerek01: What happens if I keep the torrent file? Would I be able to use it later to download the game again? I don't have much knowledge about the subject but to me, it looks like that torrent file is independent from my account and as such I can use it anytime I want.
For those of you who are interested, the answer is yes. If you keep the torrent file like me, you are able to download the game. I just tried that and it worked.

No, they don't. The link you posted simply is an instruction how you could download the files provided by Humble using BitTorrents if you desire to chose that option to get the files (which still are zip files) faster. As it has been said above by another user, a torrent file is just a tiny file pointing to the actual game files and it is required to use a BitTorrent client.

"While you can download your games, books or audio files directly to your computer, there is also the option to download them faster using BitTorrents. Torrenting a file may be a good alternative"

(Notice that Humble talks about torrenting (using a torrent file with a torrent client) a file (the actual file we are talking about).

But in the end it does not matter - we are talking about symantics here. Thank you for testing out if the file could still be downloaded using torrent if you saved the torrent file needed to do so.
