[This is a sticky post, it will be visible in every single page of this thread. It has been published in October 2020.]

Our moderation team decided not to take a side in the discussion since this giveaway thread was created by the community and, as long as there are no forum rules violated, is up to you, dear Gogers, to decide its fate. We will not set giveaway rules, edit the OP's post, nor lock the whole thread.

However, to make it easier for newcomers to understand the situation (about the OP being inactive and other), I will stick my own post right above the first one.

You are, of course, free to create new threads to start anew and make your own, clear rules. At the same time, please stay reasonable when crating them, as multiple new duplicates might make it even more confusing for many Gogers.

That being said, here you can find a post with dxenija's community poll to have better understanding of the situation: CLICK.

At the time of writing, open giveaway threads are:
- Massive Giveaways Blog (this one)
- Free (temporary) keys giveaway central topic.
- Updated Itch.io giveaways

Be nice to each other *flies away*

labronobro: Okay, but how can I proof in future that i own that copy and just didn't steal (pirated) it then?
What do you mean? Prove it to whom? Are you expecting the corporations to bang on your door and demand proof you legally own it when you start playing it?

BenKii: Outcast - Second Contact (DRM-Free) is free today at Humble Store. No Steam Key is given. It will only be available to download DRM-Free for 6 days and then it will vanish from your Humble Library.

I bought the first game but haven't played it. Is it better to play it before playing the sequel or doesn't it matter?

I'ts kind a of a shame this has become free so quick because that kind of means it's sales have flopped.

The proof of "purchase" will remain in your Humble account, even if download links are no longer working.

What's the point of not keeping those download links active is the big question here. If someone has downloaded the game when it was free, he's not going to buy it later on. Might as well let those links remain there for backup purposes. The game doesn't even have a Steam key, so there's no way for anyone to benefit from selling those.

It is a remake of the first game. The first one isn't really successful financially either to my knowledge, but it becomes sort of cult classic

Probably means there's no intention of maintaining it, or even that it'll get delisted.

The impression I get is a last-ditch attempt to garner interest in the game. The installer likely doesn't have its own update function, so it's likely a static version appetiser by the developer. Installer is 5.9GB according to HB, in case anyone was wondering.

What happens if I keep the torrent file? Would I be able to use it later to download the game again? I don't have much knowledge about the subject but to me, it looks like that torrent file is independent from my account and as such I can use it anytime I want.
I presume the big problem is updates. Is the developer putting up patch files anywhere.

It's not a torrent. It's a 5.9GB DRM-free zip archive, likely containing an executable offline installer.. Which is reusable.

It depends on what you'd call a "problem".
HB is offering a one-off DRM-free version of the game for free. Most of the one-off free offerings it has had in the past don't offer updates either. It will likely be static. No updates.
But who cares? Download it if you're interested and put it away until you get around to play it.

If the game is purchasable in the future and you enjoyed the free version, buy it retail to get updates.Or not.

Yes, that is how I would look at it myself, as a big demo.

I think you need a tracker (is that the right word?) to match people who are downloading with those who are uploading. If they remove the tracker you won't be able to connect to the seeders anymore. I'm quite new to torrents though so that might not be right!

You can download the zip archive either directly from their site or by using a torrent file they let you use. The torrent file uses their tracker, and the tracker URL includes a passkey that's specific to your account, so when the game is removed from your account, the tracker should reject your attempt to connect to it to download the contents of that specific torrent.

My bad. I'm not accustomed to Humble Bundle, and not generally a fan of the whole file sharing torrent scene.
Didn't realise they were offering a torrent option.

But it would hake sense that if they're going to remove direct link access to a file in 6 days, the torrent file will become useless as well. The whole point is to offer the game for download for a limited time only. There is a hard deadline advertised.

What do you mean? Humble Bundle literally asked me to use torrent when I tried to download the file which is what I am doing right now. It first let me download a torrent file Outcast-7693-DRMFREE.zip.torrent. It took me a few minutes to figure out what to do with it since I haven't used torrent for over 10 years.
