TStael: Well, purportedly the point of the OP was to ask if white heterosexual omnivores, of either persuasions, I take it - would be pleased, or at least netural, to see LGBT content written and put forth towards their fellow gamers.
So what say you?
timppu: Pleased, if there is some good reason for it and it really adds to the story, and it is not there just to appease the minorities or some such shit. Willem Dafoe's gay investigator character in The Boondock Saints was kinda cool, I liked it.
Negative, if it is tacked on for ideological reasons.
Overall though, I prefer games not containing too much of sexuality, sexual relationships etc. Now I wish Alyx in Half-life 2 would have been lesbian so that she would have left the male protagonist in peace. The world is crumbling around us, stop acting like a giggling schoolgirl.
For what it's worth, I didn't mind it at all e.g. playing a female character in Mirror's Edge (I bet she is lesbian anyway, I mean look at her), or a black bro in GTA San Andreas. The dating minigames in SA were kinda stupid.
Now, there's my man! :-) Sort of. You've been raised to equality, you know. And plausibly harness the fruits thereof.
Because as far as I can tell, the two of us are pretty much the only ones thus far to state an actual qualified opinion on the topic.
We are okei with LGBT content being written into games; you with reservations; I with strengthened will to a benefit of a doubt, because there is very little LGBT content in gaming at the moment.
There seems to be quite some: "it is irrelevant of course, not that I am in any way against LGBT - only I quite reasonably do not see any reason to endorse any such divisive writing. My reasons are quite rational and tangible - if LGBT could or should ever exist, I ... would not outright denounce it - but it should not, really."
Your chance, gamers with hostility or little solidarity to LGBT fellow gamers to make your point!
Why do I say "sort of" to you, Timppu?
Because you only have a flippant comments about It but not that many actual observations. This Alyx you criticize - but when end is nigh, pretty normal Finns sought some comfort and continuity - my mother was conceived during the war. Maybe my grandpa and grandma should have kept their pants on - but I am not one to criticize. Mirros's Edge, GTA - not my games, you have at it.
In my high-fantasy RPG fandom, let me state what I have remarked thus far:
- BioWare: Knights of the Old Republic. Juhani - per spin of BW - was supposed to be lesbian, but due to a "bug" could be romanced by a male hero too. Sheesh. But an absolute first, either way.
-BioWare: Dragon Age Origins. Leliana & Zevran both have a "bi-sex-rogue" option attached. Leliana well written, as far as I can tell - Zev a charming solider of fortune.
- Reality Pump: Two Worlds 2. The Captain, aka Fallanon. Surprisingly insightful, maybe a bit problematic in context, but Fal is fine!
- CD Project Red: The Witcher 2. Dethmold. It is quite well documented I find his pimple popping and slave raping characterization homophobic. He is plausibly homosexual, if bi - this would require equal opportunities raping off screen.
- BioWare: Dragon Age 2 - bi all around, and why not! Anders has nice spin for a homo romance though; and I am glad I switched to male Hawke because Isabela romance has charming cheeky lines!
- BioWare: Dragon Age Inquisition - finally a proper homo and lesbian char, and a trans were written. Dorian, Sera and Krem. Well done, BioWare! Plus some "pan-sexual" options - I admit I lol'ed in a positive way that such word was invented! Power to you BW...
Dethmold and Fal were secondary chars, the rest mainly bi-romanceable - and Dragon Age Inquisition went all in in writing specific content for the LBGT.
But from my perspective - all in all in view of all games put out to the market - this is some content, but having more would make gaming more immersive for some - and make it worse for none!
Or?
