hedwards: Those kinds of things tend to work quite well, but they're terribly slow over USB2, make sure it's USB3. I assume you don't have e.SATA.

...also maybe helping out the odd friend or two if another component in their laptop etc blows but the drive is fine (seen so many binned laptops with otherwise fine main components because the fan or the power unit went)
TBH, even e.SATA is painfully slow if you've got a ton of data to transfer. But yes, if you don't mind having to have the computer on for a long time and don't mind a huge wait, then it doesn't much matter. But, USB2 is painfully slow.

HereForTheBeer: I happen to have it with me at the hotel - it sits in the bottom of my laptop bag, in case I need it while working on an old machine. I goofed - mine is the 2.0 version, not 3.0. Why did I get 2.0? Uhhh... dunno. Comes with all of the stuff in the photo.

For an IDE drive you plug it in directly to the drive. For SATA, use the red cable and also the power cable adapter. Power brick has a power switch on its cable. Shows up as any other hard drive in Windows Explorer (or whatever file browser you're using). No drivers needed.
Thanks -thats usefull, but... are those stains?! O______o??!?!?!!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Edit: and yes, I think thats the exact kit I was shown!

haha - not stains. I have yet to remove the protective plastic from the face of the adapter, and it's starting to peel off on its own.

I went with a NAS myself, as puppy also suggested, also because of it allowing streaming to all of the laptops around rather than be a pure backup solution.

That's because I wanted not just backup but storage, so the data isn't at all on my laptops anymore (well, it's a work in progress to be honest...)

The trick was finding something relatively cheap cos most of this type of solutions are for businesses and can be quite expensive. I went with a WD Cloud... you can google it easily. I did not go with a big one where I could have RAID set up in it, I just bought a couple of USB drives - more portable - with same capacity with the plan to use them to backup the whole NAS from time to time - via USB 3 obviously otherwise the 1TB transfer (assuming I fill the NAS up) will be quite long...

I think I used the CNET guides for home networking extensively while I was thinking of what to get. They also had nice product comparisons.
