Hello all,

I have been a fan of the X-Com series since the original in the 90s. I think I actually got Terror from the Deep first, but either way I've loved the series for a long time. Enemy Unknown has absolutely blown me away. It's actually the only reason I made a Steam account and I wish GoG could get it on here.

Having it on PC and my android devices, I'm just concerned I'm going to burn myself out from it. I just love everything about it, but the battle system on missions is absolutely amazing. I never liked turn-based combat, but for some reason I just can't get enough of it from Enemy Unknown and Within.

I was hoping some of you could make recommendations of other games with the same, or very similar combat system. I see Shadowrun Returns has essentially the same combat system, so any suggestions like either of these would be greatly appreciated!

I'm not sure what the chances of GoG ever getting any of the new entries in the X-Com series, but those are Stellaris would be an instant purchase for me. I am continually impressed what kind of games they do get on here, so you never know I guess.

Hard West seems to have a similar turn based combat system.

Massive Chalice is pretty much Fantasy X-Com. A very fun game, though it could use more variety.

Wasteland 2 also has somewhat similiar combat, but it's a full on RPG with lots of stuff outside of combat to do, so I'm not sure if it's up your alley.

The most obvious answer are "Jagged Alliance 2" and "Hard West". Both should be played before even asking the question.

And then, we can start to talk about "Steamworld Heist". Hah.

(Oh, also, there is "Xenonauts", of course, if you're looking for more X-Com [edit: ah, also already mrentionned]. But that's maybe too straightforward, too directly x-com. Also, I enjoyed the "Omerta" fights. I may be in the minority there, but most grudges against Omerta were about its lack of strategic planning management stuff: it's basically just turn-based tactics in a light wrapping while people expected a whole mafia economy game. If you're looking for the fights themselves, it may be worth a look.)

There's a Humble Returns bundle with the Shadowrun games at the moment. I played Dragonfall and loved it. As for Turn-based, it's a tough genre sometimes. Edit: Ow *and* it has Xenonauts. No brainer really.

Xenonauts is great but very much something that goes back to the old X-Com's. For newer games like this they're sadly quite spread out.

Mario + Rabbids is a new game that takes good queues from XCOM.

There's Disgaea (1-5) which is finally releasing it's series on PC. one of the top games in the genre though will probably rub people who dislike anime chars the wrong way.

Fire Emblem is a great turn based series as well.

Sadly not all of these are on PC. I really wish they'd come out with a new Final Fantasy Tactics or Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, those games were great.

Jagged Alliance 1+2, Shadow Watch and to a lesser degree Fallout 1+2+Tactics.

I second Jagged Alliance 2 & Xenonauts and i'm adding Silent Storm to the list; all these games are excellent.

Nobody mentioned the Warhammer games, especially Sanctus Reach

I'd kill to see these DRM-free, or better yet, on gog. Given how long 1 has been out, though, I don't have much hope. I hadn't heard that 3-5 were coming to PC as well, but I don't hear much of anything any more.

The Battle of Westnoth, and it is free (thought it is more Turn Base Strategy)

UnderRail is a bit more RPG than the newer XCOMs but if you played and enjoyed the old Fallouts then you'll probably like it, unless you refused to play Fallout on anything but pacifist runs (you can avoid some combat in UnderRail, but not even so much as half).

Regalia: of Men and Monarchs is squad-based, turn-based tactics much like the newer XCOMs. Might be worth a look if you dig fantasy settings.

Torment: Tides of Numenera has a slightly more old-school feel to the combat mechanics but is generally pretty much like the XCOMs and SRRs that you've mentioned.

But, yeah. Jagged Alliance 2 and the original X-Com are still pretty close to the perfect squad-based, turn-based tactical combat RPGs.

ShadowRun is more RPG, but the combat mechanics are similar.
