Blackguards doesn't work good on my monitor, i have a old monitor, still working very good, not a big fun of playing a game with black bars, especially if that is an rpg.

Legacy of Crusader, played it.

Torment, tried it couple of times, i never could get into that, i do not know why.

Played neverwinter 1 and 2. The combats puts me off in them. Too bad you cannot increase combat speed like you could in isometric games.

Jade empire played it, very good.

Divinity games, played them all.

Not a big fun of earlier, deus ex game, but the new ones are good.

Played all fallout games, except the fallout 4. Got bored of open world.

POE, Wasteland 2, - played them. The newest additions to isometric rpg genre. Wasteland was good, but PoE not so much, at least for me.

I never was a big fun or ps 2 era rpg games, i really do not get why they are so popular. Never liked how they look.
Not to mention i just cannot take seriously any final fantasy game. I just can't sorry.

According to your specifications, I'd go with Fable, Freedom Force (Sort of an rpg), Vampire Bloodlines, Demon's or Dark Souls.

System Shock and [url=http://www.gog.com/game/system_shock_2]2 are good FPS RPGs. Both are available here on Gog.

Another recommendation is Chrono Trigger. It's a highly regarded JRPG and is one of my favorite games of all time. Its just not available for PC. You'll have to get it for either SNES, PS1, PSN, Nintendo DS, iOS, or Android.

Not on on gog unfortunately but a game i would suggests from what you posted is Alpha Protocol since that game has linear small levels, opposite of open world really but has a really good choice and consequences story wise I think. The shooting and stealth mechanics are below average but if you can get used to them the game is a lot of fun.

I guess I'd question how much of a purest you are when you say you want an RPG.

I'll make some left field suggestions since the standard suggestions have already been given.

I'd recommend Borderlands 2, specifically the DLCs since the DLC stories are far better than the main game. That's not to say the main game's narrative is bad - simply mediocre. I think you get everything with it nowadays since they've packaged into the GOTY edition. Mr. Torgue never fails to bring a smile to my face.

On a similar theme of silly & camp I'd also recommend Saint's Row 3 & 4. Personally I like 4 better. Both are open world but have compelling central narratives that are worthy of checking out.

Lastly, any of the Bioshock games are a must (specifically Bioshock 1) for anyone that wants a good story centric game.

They're not mutually exclusive. FPS RPGs are widely acknowledged even if you don't acknowledge them. But that's okay because it's not your request for suggestions or your thread.

If you want to make a taxonomy of what is and isn't a RPG - great - take it to a different thread and be a dick there.

My suggestions based on the RPGs I love playing the most:
Final Fantasy VII: The game begins as a rebellion against an evil corporation. Almost all aspects of the game are virtually flawless. The soundtrack is inspired from movies, it abounds with numerous fascinating min-games within it and is probably one of the best RPGs to be available in this day and age.

Planescape - Torment: A very enjoyable story-line, this game which is centered around the 'City of Doors' is a place where the word is mightier than the sword. Very entertaining, very enjoyable, very riveting. Overall, a strong story-line in a non-traditional setting.

School of Dragons: Raise and train a dragon through different games, activities and quests. Interact with the characters from DreamWorks' How to Train Your Dragon movies with these dragon games. Fascinating and very pleasing-to-the-eye graphics and fun gameplay.

[Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic:/b] An epic drama of sorts set in the Golden Age of the Republic, with very impressive gameplay and graphics. The massive environments are a joy to explore, and the sheer quantity and quality of spoken dialogue is amazing.

Let's see, what wasn't mentioned already...

Or how would a... Western JRPG / console RPG only ever released for PC work? Septerra Core, I mean. The combining magic cards from multiple party members for the more complex spells bit is a nice touch, and it's not often that you see a game where certain party members hate each other so much they'll frequently automatically attack each other when their turn comes instead of the enemy if you have them together and didn't work out their differences yet. Repetitive with the exact same fights in the exact same places whenever you cross an area and needing to do it several times though. (And on this topic, about Anachronox, yep, nice story-wise, but in terms of gameplay... meh combat, nasty pixel hunting for secrets and whatnot, keep a guide handy for those or it'll drive you crazy.)

RPGs? Well, I would recommend Neverwinter Nights, which is huge. The original Bards Tale games, which are included in the GoG version of Bards Tale 2004. Lords of Xulima is also good. Oh, and Ultima 4. :-)

Tried any of the Spiderweb Software RPGs (Geneforge series, Avadon, the Avernum series) yet?

Bard's tale is worst piece of shit i have played. maybe not the worst, sorry for being too vocal but i really do not like this game.
