As I'm planning my holiday I thought it would be fun to have some handheld gaming device to pass the time traveling but I'm not sure what to get as I haven't kept up with the latest technology for the past 20 years.
I was thinking of some sort of tablet that can play games I have on gog, like Alpha Centauri and Dosbox games, nothing too demanding (I hope) and it would be a nice extra if it could do mame and playstation emulation but I don't consider that mandatory.
I don't want to spend more than €250,- on it and preferably less, also important to me would be a reasonable quality screen, long battery life, that it controls games good and if it's not too much to ask if it runs a open and easily configurable operating system, so I prefer not to have Apple (€250,- hahahaha get out of here beggar) or Android walled garden OS unless there are good arguments to have so.

Or should I just get a Nintendo DS, if so please recommend me some good games for it.

The switch seems to be the most popular handheld at the moment, was thinking about getting myself one. The downside is the games are ridiculously expensive.
There is the gpd win and a second version coming out. The first should run most dosbox and that end, although ps emulation might be too much for it. The second version is more powerful, but more expensive and not or yet.
Personally I can see the appeal of tablets for quickly checking internet and things, but for any real real application like office or gaming no way.
You could look at laptops, most should run old stuff, just check the graphics card as most important.
The GPD Win is a GREAT option to have as a portable handheld computer, it can run emulators and several games with some GPD Win low resolution patches....

It does cost 363.33 Euro though. So it's out of your listed budget. However, if you CAN find the money for it, that would be an excellent way to go.

i think i have an old black and white Gameboy around here.

You laugh but that IMHO was the best version of Tetris on any port EVER.

You mean Spinach-green and lime-green Game Boy. There was no "black and white".

In terms of gameplay, the Switch is a winner. The battery life leaves something to be desired although it charges with a USB C cable like many newer Android phones.
Thanks for the responses!

The GPD Win looks impressive but is way beyond my budget, come to think of it €250,- is already stretching it hard.
I don't want a laptop as I don't want to lug that around on holiday.
I also never buy the latest consoles, because as like said, the prices of games are astronomical, so the Switch is not an option either.

So that probably leaves me getting a Nintendo DS after all.
Does anyone know what to look for buying a used one because there are a lot of models and what are good games? I generally like arcade style games (shooting, racing) or strategic/management games preferably isometric, or anything as long as it's fun.

How about some generic Android phone (or tablet)? Play Android games on it.

GPD sounds interesting, but I always feel PC games, even the old ones, were designed to be played on bigger screens and different kinds of controls than what handhelds offer. Sure many kinds of PC games may be fully playable on them, but you have to test them yourself I guess.

Yeah, that is actually an option too, getting a decent phone and subscription as the one I have now has always been complete garbage from the start. Still, I don't have any games on Android so I have to invest in that too.

Also a problem is I have zero knowlegde about what phone to get.

You mean, the best *casual* version of Tetris ever.

As long as TGM exists, I don't think you can call any other version of Tetris the best version ever, at least not from a hardcore standpoint.

There are some indie PC games, like Shovel Knight and Celeste, which are designed with console controls in mind (in fact, they are even available on consoles, and both games happen to have Switch versions). The GPD Win should have a good chance of playing games like these. (Shovel Knight, in particular, seems to have very low system requirements; don't know about Celeste, as I haven't played it and don't own it.)

ScummVM on my wife's laptop is my typical vacation time-waster for nighttime hotel stays.

Yes, get a Nintendo DS, connect a mouse and keyboard and play Alpha Centauri on it.

Also it doesn't feel as robust as I'm used to handhelds feeling. Not in the sense that it's wobbly or anything, but I find myself being a lot more careful with it than I ever did a GameBoy or DS. I would happily sling my 3DS in a bag and bring it many places but I wouldn't bring the Switch anywhere without a heavily padded case.
Just take a look at theTrekstor Primebook C11, if it isnt too bigfor you. 11" Hybrid, so you have a keyboard if you want, but can switch it to the back. Not for too demanding things, but regular Windows machine with 4GB of ram.
