Aside from titles developed internally by Monolith themselves, the engine seems to have been used almost exclusively for crappy budget FPS titles.

What was it about this engine, which as I mentioned in a previous thread is infamous for crashing a lot, that made it a go-to engine for crappy budget FPS back in the day? My guess was that it was seen as a sort of "cheap" alternative to the Unreal and Quake engines.

Sounds about right.

I guess you could argue that LithTech was to first-person shooter games what Unity is to hack indie developers.

If memory serves it was also the engine for some great games.

It did: Shogo, the NOLF series, AvP 2, FEAR and Condemned.

Blood 2 is OK but not terrific.
Shogo had a cool concept sure. But the game itself is shit. Broken AI, bugs, glitches, it's not very fun or worth it to go through it nowadays. Blood 2 was just pure garbage all around thanks to GTi pressuring Monolith and rushing it out for a Halloween release. A list of scrapped features is floating out there somewhere I'm sure. Even Jace Hall is ashamed with that one.

Keep in mind, much like id tech, Litchtech has different iterations. Litchtech 1.0 as far as I know only powered Shogo and Blood 2. Microsoft was initially going to jump onboard and promote the engine but I think they backed out? I can't remember.

The second version of the engine, dubbed Lithtech Talon, powered a number of games. Some good, some bad, some mediocre. AvP, Kiss Psycho Circus, NOLF, that terrible Die Hard FPS, and that fucking AWFUL game Weapons of Mass Destruction. I think Might and Magic 9 also used this engine. This version of the engine is decent. Much more stable and much less ugly than 1.0.

The third version of the engine, dubbed Lithtech Jupiter, only improved on the previous iteration a little bit iirc. TRON 2.0 and NOLF 2 use this version of the engine and I think Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault.

The fourth and final version, Lithtech Jupiter EX, added all kinds of shit and is what powers FEAR, FEAR 2, Condemned, and even Shadow of Mordor I believe.

So, depending on what engine you are refering to, Litchtech has seen a mixture of good games and bad games using it.

Jupiter was also used for that awful Gods and Generals game. Terrible? Yep. Unintentionally hilarious? Absolutely.

Some of the most broken AI I've ever seen in any game.
