South Scrimshaw, Part 1
https://www.gog.com/en/game/south_scrimshaw_part_one

I finally got around to checking this out today. It takes little more than an hour to get through. It's more of an storybook that is narrated and minimally animated than it is an actual game. I think it would fall under the kinetic novel category as in visual novels with no choices (or where the choices don't matter as you reach the same end regardless.)

The plot is that you're watching a PBS style nature program about an alien whale. Part 1 covers the first four chapters from birth to the end of his adolescence. At the end of part 1, it is mentioned that the researchers will resume filming the whale in 20 years. It does reach an ending for now with the promise of more in the future. From the Devlog (on Itch), Part 1 consists of over 400 unique illustrations and chapters have been released at a rate of once a year.

I hope this help you decide as to where this falls in terms of free games.

Still feels like a demo if you ask me. :D There was another game that was similar, Our Lives Beginning Always that had a similar model. In the end we all agreed to disagree LOL

Calling South Scrimshaw, Part 1 a Demo would be like calling the first episode of Game of Thrones a demo for a tv series or the first Harry Potter book a demo for a book series.

South Scrimshaw, Part 1 is comparable. It tells a complete story with the expectation that there is more to come. It is meant to be comparable to watching an episode of Planet Earth as there's things that occur like they turn on lights at night to see what the whales are up to, but the whales just react to the lights that were turned on to watch them causing the scientists to turn the lights off.

The only argument that I would make against it is that it really isn't a game.

Following that analogy: It's not a full game (or story), just as a epissode of GoT season 1 is not a full TV series or even a season of a TV series.
I'm open for suggestions for a new term :)

The TV industry calls the first episode (usually twice as long as a regular one, but not always) a Pilot that is used to sell the rest of the series.
I recall back in the '80s once a year one of the networks used to show a bunch of unsold pilots in prime time every night for a week.

I like that. We got a free Pilot (+ some episodes) :)
Well, let's try not to go off topic here again :D Pilot or demo or otherwise :) It's hard to draw the line on what constitutes a demo and what constitutes a game nowadays. :) Might have to create a a whole new category to track.
