Hey Linux People!

As some of you know, I was having horrible problems with my older PC and Win10. And since MS isn't likely to change their model from "expensive MS ecosystem with expensive software with high security risks and putting ads on your OS that you paid $130 for" marketing direction, I decided to give LInux a try.

Of course, the "Mint is easy" turned into 2 days of utter frustration, learning the new vernacular and accidentally formatting the wrong drive (goodbye Witcher 2 saves!).

But I still have hope!

My big problem right now is that I need Company of Heroes. It's an important game to me that a buddy of mine and I play almost every week for a long time. I've tried every way I can think of, but admittedly, I'm not well-versed in Linux (been using it for 2 days).

I have Linux Mint (the newest version). It is cinnamony mint!

I've tried installing Steam with PlayOnLinux, running Steam, installing CoH and then clicking "play." That does nothing for me.

I've tried installing Company of Heroes (steam version) wtih PlayOnLinux. I click on "play" and it does nothing that I can tell.

I've seen all sorts of directions that made no sense to me and I'm ultra-noob. If you know of a way to get the game running on Linux, please let me know.

What do you mean by "Company of Heroes (steam version)"? I can't see that installation script.

Edit: Oh, so you manually installed the game following the instructions on WineHQ?

Where do you click on play?

If you don't even get any crash notification then you probably haven't even started the game.

I tried to install from PlayOnLinux program (that is supposed to auto-configure things for people who are slow like me :D).

<see attachment>

Let me go study WineHQ to see what it says. I could not get the files I needed from Steam b/c it won't download or install anything that's a win-only program.

EDIT: I checked out WineHQ. I did read that. I didn't see anything useful. This is what I found:

https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=17806&iTestingId=81872

which is very old information.

UPDATE: I got it to start up, but not connecting online. I'll be working on that now. Thanks!

Another update: The company of Heroes it installed was not the correct version. I'll need to do some more looking upping.

What did you get to start up? What doesn't connect?

You have to install Steam in PlayOnLinux. Have you done that and does it start up?

The important information from WineHQ is: The game should work out of the box if you've got Steam running and you are using Wine version 1.7.46.

I have an older version of wine. I haven't yet figured out how to install software. :) Let me see if I can get this thing updated. Thanks!

Update: I'm still not sure. I have to go get dinner ready. I'll be back in a few hours. Thanks for your help (here and those on chat)

quick update: PlayOnLinux says I'm using 1.7.53-steam_crossoverhack and 1.5.3

and last update: I figure out how to get 1.7.46. It looks like I have to install it again over steam, so that'll be a while. Thanks again! I'll let you know how it goes.

re -It looks like I have to install it again over steam, so that'll be a while

on play on Linux, when you choose to install a game. you are given an option, (configure installation or something that sounds like that). in there you can select whichever version of wine you need specifically for that game. you should also be able to install certain "windows only" programs" . with play on Linux you shouldn't need to use the terminal or install other software separately.
hope this helps, its been a while since Ive used play on Linux. let me know how it goes, I'll be happy to help.
Tallima, we could help you a lot more easily if you could describe to us what you are actually doing. I simply don't get most of what you've posted here.

If you want us to help you, please tell us in detail every step you've taken and what you've clicked on.

I have no idea how to help your situation, but Company of Heroes is such a great game that I hope you get it running smoothly.

He will. WineHQ says it works flawlessly without making any tweaks. The only thing that makes it a bit complicated is that you have to install Steam first.

Looking over the WineHQ reports, it looks like CoH needs Visual C++ 2005 and DirectX. To do this click on "Configure", select the virtual drive for CoH then under the "Install Components" tab install d3dx9 and vcrun2005.

BTW, you can change the Wine versions used by things in PlayOnLinux by clicking "Configure", selecting the virtual drive/game and then changing the Wine version setting under the "General" tab. It'll only show currently installed Wine versions - to install a different version of Wine you need to select "Tools --> Manage Wine Versions" from the main POL window. I recommend trying the latest version of Wine-Staging first and setting it to use the CSMT patch ("Configure --> Wine --> Configure Wine --> Staging --> [X] Enable_CSMT for better graphic performance").

To be fair Microsoft has repeatedly shown themselves to be not particularly trustworthy with their actions over the years. Plus the lengths Microsoft are going to try to push people into "upgrading" to Windows 10 - frankly it's pathetic. Some examples from my experience:

- Having to constantly play "Whack-A-Mole" with updates or face regular harassment in the form of pop-ups, a fake Windows Update window etc trying to make you "upgrade". That pop-up appears every single time I boot into Windows.

- If not playing "Windows Update Whack-A-Mole" then automatically downloading the full install data for Win10 without asking the user for permission or even notifying them that it's happening until after it's done.

- Hiding the Windows Update system tray notification, instead only showing the "Get Windows 10" icon. For the past couple of months or so I've no longer been seeing the Windows Update icon appear in my system tray to inform me when updates are available, apparently replaced by the "Get Windows 10" thing. When I mentioned this to my brother he realised he hadn't seen it for some time either; it turned out that there were about 30 "Important" updates to install that he had no idea about because of this!

- The supposed "mistake" that took Microsoft over a week to fix whereby the "Upgrade to Windows 10" "optional update" was marked for install by default in lieu of all other updates (all the "Important" updates were not being automatically selected on my system at least) and could not be hidden (attempting to hide it would grey it out & then next time you opened WU it was back and reselected).

heh. don't totally agree with you but good luck. the smaller the subculture, the more stubborn and tinfoil-hattish they get.

^ also a variant that does not work on my notebook. and playing a steam game on a linux os is just... wth. wonder if stallman predicted this sort of shit.

btw, don't quote me , don't reply to me.and i mean everyone in this topic .please.

I open PlayOnLinux and have some options. I click on what seems to be the best option - Steam (Company of Heroes) and click Run.

I have it running the correct version of wine now and have dx9 and the c++ stuff installed correctly.

When I click on Steam (Company of Heroes) it opens up the steam client with no games installed.

I click on Company of Heroes (steam edition) and then click "Install."

That's where I'm at right now. It's still installing -- rather slowly today (internet is slow today).

The last time I did this, though, I clicked play and there was no noticable change. It was as if Play wasn't even a button to press on the Steam client. I was not using the correct version of Wine and I did not have the dx9 installed. And I had bad gfx drivers. So that could be a big difference. Last time, after I closed steam, if I tried to run Steam (Company of Heroes) from PlayOnLinux, I would get the steam client again without any games installed.

----------------

As far as MS and Win10, I loved MS as of a few months ago. I have an older PC (core 2, 3ghz, gtx 650Ti, 4 gb ram) and I use my computer probably 5-8 hours per week on average. So I keep it turned off unless I'm on it. Each time I turn it on, Win10 downloads updates and take the full capacity of both cores to do it. So I've missed several gaming sessions with friends b/c I'm pulling 1 frame every 15 seconds.

I pick an OS to make get what I want done with my computer. And Win10 has taken away so much control from me that I no longer enjoyed my computer. Even without CoH, I'll probably keep Linux. It's now stable with my nVidia drivers, so it works. And it has almost everything I want. But more importantly, it has everything I need. Sadly, Win10 no longer gives me access to use my computer when I want to.

I almost went back to 7, but in 5 years, I'll be stuck with 10 still. So why bother? I'm just delaying the inevitable. And after having my CC stolen a few times and different accounts hacked a few times, it'll be nice not to have to re-image every 6 months just to keep the hackers off us.
