When it comes to video games, do you think levels are a good thing, or do you think games would be better off without them?
Are you talking about difficulty levels or levels as game locations?

Maybe they're talking about leveling up. Doesn't make sense to strip out level design without turning it into a text based game, and difficulty levels, well not every game has them. But I'll bet monopoly money it's about leveling up your character.
I'm talking about any thing that's called a "level" in gaming, actually.

You forgot spell levels!

Good thing. Otherwise all the platforms would be crooked and contractors would have to be called in to come straighten them out.

There is no Cow Level.

LEVEL is a palindrome.

So is DELEVELED.

Insulin levels are important.

*drinks a cursed potion of gain level*

(By the way, in Nethack, that particular item doesn't do what you'd expect.)
Good levels are good, bad levels are bad.
In most games I could well do without character levling.
The enemies level with you anyway, so ... what for?

Not every game needs a role play element, but if one wants to learn new skills, that works just as well without levels (see Batman Arkham).

Remember all the games where you reached maximum level and can still learn stuff. This would work just as well from the beginning.

Yes.

Then it's a nonsensical question. It's like asking "are numbers good or bad?" or "are jumps good or bad?". There are games with numbers and without numbers, with jumps or without jumps, with levels or without levels. And any of those games can be good or bad. It all depends on how you use levels, jumps, or numbers.
I dunno, a lot of games got away with a Z axis for a while. Maybe they were onto something.
Mine is bad.

They shouldn't level with you, but if they do then the game is bad. As to "what for," it's so you can go back to an area after leveling and curb stomp the enemies that were giving you trouble before. Which is fun. And that's why enemies that level with you are bad.

But it's perfectly reasonable for enemies to get stronger as the dungeon level increases.

In other words, when you go down a level in a dungeon (or up a level in a tower), it makes sense for the enemies to get stronger.

Except that, in some games and game engines, the Z axis is not the vertical axis. (In Super Mario 64, for example, Z is on the ground (perpendicular to X), while Y is the vertical axis.)

Sure, though it depends on the game. If you have multiple locations, the enemies in a particular dungeon can all be roughly the same level.
