I think the point was that you can find anecdotal evidence to "prove" anything, even if it sounds absurd. You might even find that one guy who turned to car theft because of GTA, if you look hard enough. XD

Though the whole comment chain made little sense to begin with. Why bring up anecdotes when someone points to studies? Are most studies based on anecdotes? I don't think so at least. Even the poor quality non-peer reviewed ones. They might be dishonest and hiding poor methodology, but to base the whole study on 'this one time, at band camp, my friend had ice cream and then went swimming and drowned. so there must be some relation with ice creams and drowning, we must conclude' seems to never happen (i hope).

Anyways, I've read some of the studies back in the day and they seemed quite rigorous in their methodology, correcting for different kind of biases with statistical methods and so on. But I also have (maybe too much) trust in the peer review process of high impact ranking journals.

There's always activists that don't see how stupid it all is. I've seen states wanting to add extra taxes on sugary drinks, try to classify 'pumpkins' as 'Halloween decorations' to push another tax on it (Washington state), and organizations that want to ban any type of trans-fat sugar coffee and cigarettes. Then there's PETA that would want us to be vegetarians or eat bugs.

Truthfully if he bans the games... i don't see how he'd enforce it. At best the stores would still sell boxes because they are only selling 'codes' and there's no data there, or steam or downloading video games couldn't be stopped. Even if you could, VPN's would hide and get around that easily enough. (VPN's are actually pretty nice after using one for a while myself). Only by cutting all electricity could he succeed but that's like firing a nuke to take out a mosquito...

I think with the political climate, tensions are high enough that people probably won't take any small amount of BS where they would have a year or two ago. I think things are quickly going to come ahead, be it video games, politicians, censorship, firearms, food, jobs, imported goods, movies, TV shows, overseas wars, Right to repair, DRM, microtransactions, or any other little thing. And i don't think it will be pretty.

The above US Supreme Court case specifically prohibits banning violent video games.

Whenever i see lawmakers pushing ill conceived laws, it is always the same 'tunnel vision' effect going on.

They focus on the problem people they want to interdict and how to interdict them. The effectiveness of the law and the new problems that the law may create are often poorly considered/debatable....

But the one thing lawmakers care least of all and almost never bothered to consider, are all the law abiding citizens who will be disadvantaged by the new law. Law abiding citizens are unimportant, what is important are the few problem people.

This above attitude runs riot in most western countries, but at least in America you got the constitution working overtime to hold back this tide of government contempt for the freedoms of law abiding citizens.

I will never understand why it is necessary to goose step all over the freedoms of law abiding citizens to control fringe elements... there has got to be a better way.
