I know I'm, uhm, 46 years late, but I've just seen Midnight Cowboy for the first time. And instantly that one Futurama episode made sense!
Not sure what I can say about the film however. Absolutely phenomenal. It's rare films such as Midnight Cowboy that leave me with a mad respect for certain actors. That part where Hoffman says "I'm scared"... Man, I'm still reeling from it. I don't know what it is about some of those old films. Perhaps it's because whenever we watch something really old, it's usually one of the better films from back then. Or perhaps the better writers and directors back then were simply superior, on average, to the better ones of today.

Only X-Rated movie to win 'Best Picture'.
I enjoyed The Imitation Game. It's the only movie I've ever seen with a known gay character, and the only movie I've seen in probably around a decade.

On the other hand, note that the movie does have some historical inaccuracies. Wikipedia, I believe, has a list of some of them.

Seems a bit excessive :P
Semi mildly interestingly, it seems that the MPAA decided to, uhm, grace everyone with their presence just the year before.

In 1975 it wasn't excessive. :P It's also one of many reasons you have the NC-17 rating now because obviously Cowboy isn't pornographic, which actually makes it one of the few non pornographic movies I've ever watched. :D

Sorry about that, something in my throat :)
They were most definitely not better back then, it's just that the good movies survive and the bad gets forgotten very quickly. Unless it's something exceptionally awful that simply gets remembered for it's awfulness, like Plan 9 from Outer Space. I mean, I can barely remember any movies I've watched except for the ones I found enjoyable or really bad because those are the ones worth remembering, so overall I think those are the ones that we pass on to later generations.

Last movie I watched though was Jurassic World and I liked it more than I expected! I thought it would try really hard to be Jurassic Park 1.2 but I felt like it was more of a tribute or something to the first JP with some silly over the top dino action added as flavour.

Right, like I know what year it really was! :P I haven't owned a watch in 25 years!
Ah... I thought there had to be a thread like this but a quick search didn't turn up anything :P

I honestly can't sit and watch any movie made past 2005 or so. Every single movie post 2005-2006 has made me either turn it off or get up and walk out. Not to be a film snob or anything, it's just that shallow stories and wall to wall CGI shit just turns me right off. If the movie fails at making me care about anything going on, then there's usually very little reason to continue watching. Older films might seem out of date, they might have dust and scratches, they even feature subject matter deemed to be offensive or inappropriate for modern audiences, but at least with those older movies you had visceral human drama and believable things happening. If I can't connect in some organic way with what I'm experiencing on the screen, then there's very little reason to indulge in something that is so disconnecting.

For a specific answer, I tried recently to watch the new Indiana Jones movie that came out in 2007. Got about 10-15 minutes into it before turning it off in disgust.

Possibly fewer and farther between, but there still are absolute master pieces, eg: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1490017/ :D
Expendables 3.

Actually enjoyed this one, I hated 2 and 1 was just ok.
The Duellists, starring Harvey Keitel and Keith Carradine. It was very good, but I will say I liked the writing very much and the swordsmanship less so.

A friend of Carradine's character said of Keitel's character: "The enemies of reason have a certain blind look. He has that, don't you think?"
Carradine introduced himself as "...a mere imp of Satan. I cannot claim to be one of his demons."

Christopher Lee once said the main thing you must do when filming a fight scene is to appear to be trying to hurt or kill your opponent, not just waving your weapon around (I'm paraphrasing here). That is absolutely true, and in the Duellists I found a lot of the fighting to be less than convincing in this way, especially considering that the characters were supposed to be skilled combat veterans.

Ah well, a good movie from Ridley Scott.

That movie was a fucking crime though. It's right up there with the Star Wars 'prequels'. No, actually, it's probably worse.
