A platformer that you'll surely dig.

Shovel Knight, the award-winning platformer that devout lovers of the genre are constantly raving about, is 33% off for a few more hours. Grab it while it's hot!

Starting tomorrow, March 3rd, the game will be getting a permanent price increase. This will better reflect the free content that the game has received since its release, as well as the upcoming free update that will be added to it later this spring.

Existing owners of the game will not be affected by the price change.

To better understand the reasons behind it, make sure to read this comprehensive Q&A by developers Yacht Club.

The 33% discount will last until March 2nd, 11PM UTC. That's tonight, so act fast!
Well this was pretty disappointing, the email came just as I was arriving at work and the sale ended an hour before quitting time. It's like when my wife gives me directions while I'm driving "Oh wait, you should have turned left back there"
Meh. I'll wait for second or third price change with tons of free content:)
...
And I always thought that cheating with "free" content happens only in Czechia
this has been an instabuy I have never regretted. I find it too difficult to think I will complete all these new campaigns, but who knows. Maybe next time I will cheat a little.
I might have bought this if I was given notice before they raised the price (it was during my sleep hours). It's not my kind of game and I might buy it only if it is around €5 in the future. On the other hand I think the supporters did well for the people who bought the game when it came out, those people certainly enjoy that kind of game and to have more campaigns without the need to pay for them is great.
(I'm not sure but I think I might have this game on the VITA with those PS Plus monthly offers)
*edit* just checked ps store and It was Rogue Legacy that was given not Shovel Knight.

Matruchus: Thank you for the notice. Was looking for a better offer on the game since it doesn't seem to have much content so I guess it will have to wait another 2-3 years.

Edit: Price will increase to 24.99$ as per data on developer site. Good luck with that price.

astroclay: Just curious, but why don't you consider the game to have much content? It has been continually supported by the developers and is still set to receive two additional updates with new playable characters.
I always value games content wise. Curently it has only 6-7 hours worth of content which drops it into less then 5€ category for me. That is my criteria. Sure it plays on the Super Mario theme for all of us oldies and makes me hype up but pricewise its no go.

By that criteria, all open world games should be "most excellent," which they aren't. Just because a game is long doesn't make it necessarily good in any way. Quantity != quality.

I haven't played an open world game yet so can't comment about that.

yyahoo: Just a heads up, Shovel Knight has never been discounted any more than 33% on GOG or Steam in its entire history and the devs have gone on record as being against the "devaluation" of games through the offering of high discounts. I think it's safe to say that this price, right now, is the cheapest that Shovel Knight may ever be. If you may ever want it, now is the time to buy it.
In 5-10 years it's going to be in a humble bundle $1 tier. It's not like anyone's so hyped or desperate for this indie platformer that they can't forget about it until then. You get AAA titles for less, so they can overvalue their game as much as they want for as long as they want as far as the consumer market is concerned.

Where did you get that from? I spent more time than that on my first playthrough of the main game, and that was before the release of the Plague Knight(?) campaign, and the upcoming extra campaigns, and they also added tons of mini games and bonus challenges. I still think the new price of 25 bucks is a little too much, but it offers quality content for much more than 6 hours of game time.

Actually, a whole lot of people were that hyped about it. And of course most of them have long since bought a copy. :P

Also, it's not "overvalued" if it sells -- which it did, and I suspect it will continue to do so.

paladin181: More free content for Shovel Knight? Yes please. The game is fantastic with excellent controls. Why wouldn't I want more.

NOTE: price increase will not affect me as I own it already. I don't care for it,but really don't care about it. Game was never expensive so if you don't already own it, WHY NOT?
Why Not?
Really, you answered that yourself, by "I don't care for it.", and also shows why thet didn't charge you.
They get no backlash from owners, that way.

Why not?
If you don'y already own it, you either were waiting for the price to drop, or don'y care.
Providing so called free content, linked to a price rise, isn't going to attract any new customers.
If existing owners get that content free, new customers should as well.

They would be justified in not dropping the price, for their old game, by adding new "free" content, but by raising the price, it's not free, and claiming that is a lie.
Free must apply to everybody, not a restricted subset.

Old games should become cheaper, over time, not more expensive.
Adding extra content for free, justifies slowing down the drop in price, not increasing it.

As this thread shows, it's putting off new customers, not attracting them.
That's why not, it bad for consumers, and a bad decision for the devs, as well.

Zoidberg: Wow, seriously, gogers, you disapoint me. :(

Increasing the game's content three times FREE as promised is being "asshole"?

Not willing to devalue your game's value by doing hilariously low sale is "bad decision"?

Let me tell you, guys: you are ALL off your chumps.

Shovel Knight is truly the BEST 2D platformer I have ever played: plays like a charm, lovely pixel art and animation, terrific music AND free content.

With the three added campaigns (which I haven't even done yet) it is well UNDERPRICED at 25€.

Yacht Club Games? Don't change: you are doing quite right. And you are losing absolutely NO sale by not selling to these kind of people.

The "reals" know! ;)

masayersuk: As far as I can tell the new campaign that is already with the game isn't actually new levels, it is just a different class unlocked to play through with. That is fine and something a lot of games provide as freebies to new and existing customers to increase sales or cross-promote.

Heck Dungeon of endless from one of my fav devs added 4 new characters from TF2 in a free update and it impressed me enough I bought the dlc I was missing from the game with a smile.

To call things separate campaigns though does seem like someone is overselling what they actually did. The truth is what they are actually doing is providing a couple of extra classes and basically the same levels (which they promised to their kickstarter backers anyway).

The standalones just seem to be cut downs versions of the regular game and a rather feeble justification for a price rise.

Perhaps some customers are OK with it, others who have the game already are no doubt delighted about another class coming out to play through with.

I'm not going to judge anyone who bought it or is completely OK with what the dev is doing or anyone who is not OK with it.

My own opinion is I think they oversold what they are offering and frankly I will just buy stuff from companies who are more straight forward and upfront about what they are doing it and why.
Not the same levels. They haven't built them all from scratch but there has been work done to make them compatible with the new movement set.
high rated
Time went by pretty fast, I thought I'd have some time to decide when I woke up (some time before this post) but nope.
Oh well, I don't think I want to support these devs anyhow.

I find it certainly silly to claim to someone values content and then just counts it by the hour. I bought this game some time ago and absolutely enjoyed it. While game time was more of a concern for me when I was younger and sometimes bought as little as 2-4 (physical) copies a year it has become an almost irrelevant category for me since I buy online, considering how many games are now in my backlog.

Nowadays I consider 8 hours to be almost the ideal time for a game except for a few rare cases where more of the same has been truly enjoyable (e.g. Dark Souls).

It feels a bit odd to change the price to reflect added free content (slightly contradictory just by the terms, even thought I understand what they are getting at). Nonetheless, the game is an outstanding joy and much deserves to be bought at the current price (for me the base price is €14,10).

It has 6-7 hours of content if you race to the finish line and put the game down.

6-7 hours is the time required to beat the game for the first as Shovel Knight.
Then you have the Plague Knight campaign, which is another 6-7 hours of content.
Then you have the NG+ for both of them, that let you replay the game while keeping all of your upgrades but taking double damages.
Then you have 41 music sheet to collect with Shovel Knight and 420 cryptocoin to collect with Plague Knight.
Then you can choose to replay the game again trying to speedrun it, beat it without upgrades or not dying at all for achievements.
Then you still have a bunch of trials to complete in the Challenge mode for both characters.

I've easely spent 30+ hours into the game already and I'm far from done with the content it has to offer.

~~

Btw, I think that people comparing Shovel Knight with retro games are serving it badly. It sure draws a lot of inspiration from oldies, but Shovel Knight stands on its own merit and is far more than just a copycat. It get very innovative and the execution is simply perfect.
I was only mildly interested in this, but with the impending price increase? Eh.. why not? :P Grabbed it at last night's 33% discount.
