A platformer that you'll surely dig.

Shovel Knight, the award-winning platformer that devout lovers of the genre are constantly raving about, is 33% off for a few more hours. Grab it while it's hot!

Starting tomorrow, March 3rd, the game will be getting a permanent price increase. This will better reflect the free content that the game has received since its release, as well as the upcoming free update that will be added to it later this spring.

Existing owners of the game will not be affected by the price change.

To better understand the reasons behind it, make sure to read this comprehensive Q&A by developers Yacht Club.

The 33% discount will last until March 2nd, 11PM UTC. That's tonight, so act fast!
Raising prices just for content. Wasnt that the purpose of DLC?. Even worse -- plenty of devs provide extra content for FREE. way to go these devs.. :/
If Terraria did this, what price would it have? I don't even want to think about it haha
Wow, seriously, gogers, you disapoint me. :(

Increasing the game's content three times FREE as promised is being "asshole"?

Not willing to devalue your game's value by doing hilariously low sale is "bad decision"?

Let me tell you, guys: you are ALL off your chumps.

Shovel Knight is truly the BEST 2D platformer I have ever played: plays like a charm, lovely pixel art and animation, terrific music AND free content.

With the three added campaigns (which I haven't even done yet) it is well UNDERPRICED at 25€.

Yacht Club Games? Don't change: you are doing quite right. And you are losing absolutely NO sale by not selling to these kind of people.

The "reals" know! ;)

ssokolow: Doesn't matter to me. In order to stretch my budget fairly across all appealing projects, I set a $5 limit on IsThereAnyDeal's notifications system and wait for however long it takes for the developers to feel they've exhausted the higher-priced market niches. (And I don't remember it ever discounting more than 50% ($7.50) here so far.)

As much as Shovel Knight was one of the hardest games to put out of mind after putting it on the waitlist, it's hard enough finding time to play the games I already have these days, so I'm in no hurry.

I just hope the price increase will bring it to no more than $20, given that it's especially rare for modern indie titles to see a discount higher than 75% here.

yyahoo: Just a heads up, Shovel Knight has never been discounted any more than 33% on GOG or Steam in its entire history and the devs have gone on record as being against the "devaluation" of games through the offering of high discounts. I think it's safe to say that this price, right now, is the cheapest that Shovel Knight may ever be. If you may ever want it, now is the time to buy it.
If that's the case I would indeed be passing on this. I may be nostalgic about some NES games but I'm not nostalgic about the genre itself and I feel many people share this sentiment.

I feel this is a bad move that will result in lost sales if the reported price is correct which would ultimately hamper new content. I won't be surprised if there are even bigger discounts waiting as a result. Maybe this is one of those titles that if they can't continue supporting it through existing sales they should rather just let it age gracefully.

It's entirely possible I'm wrong, but I seem to remember it briefly going to $7.50 during one of GOG's insomnia sales.

Either way, I've got quite literally thousands of games I could be playing instead , not to mention hundreds of thrifted novels, dozens of non-fiction books like The Visual Display of Quantitative Information by Edward R. Tufte, and enough fanfiction and programming project ideas to last me the rest of my life... and, even if that weren't the case, this month's budget is the tightest it's been in a long time, so I can't justify buying Shovel Knight right now even if I were willing.

When I'm in the mood for a platformer, I'll just pull out my Retrode and work on beating the Donkey Kong Country games I never quite completed as a kid or grab the ROMs I extracted from my DotEmu editions of the Sega Mega Drive Classics packs and beat the games I always wanted as a kid but never had because we only had Nintendo consoles.

I'm sorry for not being a blindly consumeristic useful idiot? Yacht Club Games are about as on the line as they can be here without crossing over into full blown avarice. If it were EA pulling this stunt gamers would be crucifying them for it.
Damn. Too late. That was quick!
If you want to include free content, do it without asking for anything in return and don't change your mind. If you want to charge for it, then release it as DLC instead. So, everyone has the option to decide if they want more content or not. What they could do is to release free content up to a point where they feel they don't wish to do that anymore, then switch over to DLC.

Also, this is preferential treatment of early buyers which make absolutely no sense. What is the difference between someone who bought it earlier or later, if these customers opt to purchase the game at full price? So you are punishing people for knowing about the game later or making a decision to buy it at another point (which benefits the gamer, as most games have bugs and updates till they reach a settling point)? I would think splitting between the people who gave you more money vs less (if one wishes to dice things this way) would make more sense (Not that it really does, as even though the game has been released almost 2 years ago, it has never gone on a discount lower than 34% on Steam).

This feels like a backhand way of milking their customers.

You're telling people they are wrong to question a dubious business decision? Shovel Knight is not a new game. Additional content isn't a very good reason for a price increase at this point. On the contrary the developers should actually try to keep interest in the game alive and not drive it away.

It may be the greatest thing since sliced bread for you buy for countless others it won't be. I know personally that this is the kind of game I'd only be interested in if I got it on a $2-3 sale 5 years down the line. Perhaps they should have kept new content as paid DLC so there could be a try the base game before you buy.

I truly hope that this increase won't put off too many people that would ultimately result in your experience becoming worse but honestly I see that as being most likely the case and all because someone doesn't want to "devalue" the [perceived] value of their game.

And who are the "reals"? Nobody is more special because they may or may not like a game.

You have not read my post.
I think that given the amount of added content since its release, a price increase is justified. For those who supported the game early on, the devs provided free upgrades, which is very nice, but for those coming late to the party and suddenly finding a much more robust game, a price increase is fair for the amount of extra work the devs have done.

Although, as some people pointed out, it would have been better to split the game as a base game and DLCs (of course, every old customer having access to all of it) so that it won't put off new customers by offering a cheaper base game to try out.

I have. I have not seen any of the "asshole" comments. I have seen the comments about "devaluing" and I don't agree that 33% off a title that's already priced out of line with most of the same genre is hilariously low, when some games on here go for -90%

As some here have said they're forgetting about the "collectors" that would purchase games on the off chance we would get to play them. With over 100 games in the back log SK isn't a game I'm going to miss if the developers have this attitude towards a fairly priced competing sale.
From Yacht Club Games Website:

"Q: What do I have to do to make sure my version of Shovel Knight becomes Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove?! Is there a time limit? Or a store? Or a link? Or a voucher?
A: Nothing! Just like how existing versions expanded with the the Plague of Shadows update, all current versions of Shovel Knight will become this new version automatically!"

In other words, buy it now! Before you have to pay more later.
As for the price increase, I think they have a right to increase the price of their game. I think anyone would not expect to work for free. If I was a developer, I definitely would want to get paid for my work. Yacht Club Games is generous by giving the content for free to existing owners.
As long as they gave a heads up beforehand I don't see a problem with this. I don't own the game though as those visuals give me a headache.

They are doing the same that Pixellore did with Subterrain. They gave a lengthy heads up before the purification update and the reception of at the majority house was very positive. Maybe it's the people here?

edit: I guess the different between Shovel Knight and Subterrain is that the former received free 'big' content prior to this. Subterrain was a once off.

Experiment513: Thanks for the heads up GOG! I've been watching this title for a while. I was waiting for a 50%+ discount but that's not going to happen for a while I guess... bought! :)
Same here, been wishlisted for a while now. Managed to buy it about an hour after the sale started and so am happy to have picked up an awesome game, with loads of great content, for a very reasonable price.
