We want to keep our promise of releasing free content for all players.

HypersomniacLive: Sorry, while it's your right to charge for it, it's not exactly releasing free content when keeping your promise comes with a price.

I guess that next time they release a free upgrade, the price will increase again, eh?
Hey atleast we get a heads up. Albeit an insipid single hour heads up :(

Matruchus: Thank you for the notice. Was looking for a better offer on the game since it doesn't seem to have much content so I guess it will have to wait another 2-3 years.

Edit: Price will increase to 24.99$ as per data on developer site. Good luck with that price.
Indeed. I never paid attention to it before because it looked like yet another "pixel art" platformer to me, and a price increase isn't going to increase my interest.

For old decrepit people who can't twitch correctly.

Asking for a friend.
No, but there are cheat codes.
Found the game unimpressive, but then I don't have nostalgia for these kinds of titles. You can add all the content you want, but if the core game doesn't appeal, it does me little good. Same with games that use procedural level generation to extend replayability, but which aren't worth playing even one time through.

I'm sure there are folks who like this game, and who think this move is a good idea. Personally I prefer a base game, DLCs, and finally a Complete/Ultimate/GOTY edition bringing it all together. But if people are willing to buy into these other kinds of schemes, then there's no disincentive for devs to offer them. Just like how spam and microtransactions wouldn't exist if they didn't work.

Mmhmm. Sure ;)

Thanks. Hmmmm.

More free content for Shovel Knight? Yes please. The game is fantastic with excellent controls. Why wouldn't I want more.

NOTE: price increase will not affect me as I own it already. I don't care for it,but really don't care about it. Game was never expensive so if you don't already own it, WHY NOT?

trusteft: So, is this like pure platform game or what?

ssokolow: Yes. It's a tribute to NES platformers like Duck Tales and Mega Man.
Thank you.

IronArcturus: It's very reminiscent of classic NES games like Mario, Mega Man, and Ducktales. If you like platformers then I'd definitely recommend it!
Thank you.

Good luck with that.

IMHO it is a bad decision with a bad reason.

The very likely result will be:
- Bad reputation
- Less sales because of the higher price
- People which haven't bought it yet, even less motivated to buy it.

Anyway, not my game just my thoughts :)
Thanks for the heads up GOG! I've been watching this title for a while. I was waiting for a 50%+ discount but that's not going to happen for a while I guess... bought! :)

I can answer this one. When I emailed them several years ago to ask about why their game had been regularly put on sale on Steam while never having been put on sale on GOG (at that point), I was told to not be cheap.

ssokolow: Doesn't matter to me. In order to stretch my budget fairly across all appealing projects, I set a $5 limit on IsThereAnyDeal's notifications system and wait for however long it takes for the developers to feel they've exhausted the higher-priced market niches. (And I don't remember it ever discounting more than 50% ($7.50) here so far.)

As much as Shovel Knight was one of the hardest games to put out of mind after putting it on the waitlist, it's hard enough finding time to play the games I already have these days, so I'm in no hurry.

I just hope the price increase will bring it to no more than $20, given that it's especially rare for modern indie titles to see a discount higher than 75% here.

yyahoo: Just a heads up, Shovel Knight has never been discounted any more than 33% on GOG or Steam in its entire history and the devs have gone on record as being against the "devaluation" of games through the offering of high discounts. I think it's safe to say that this price, right now, is the cheapest that Shovel Knight may ever be. If you may ever want it, now is the time to buy it.
I know it's perhaps not your opinion, but I don't totally agree with this. I get the idea in principle, but I also think that the way the modern digital distribution market works is a little different. There are many many people who don't buy games to play them that day or even week. They buy them more as collectors, to get them for the day they're ready to play them and have them in their library. Game devs absolutely benefit from this mentality, since huge numbers of sales come from these type of people. People who buy their game when they otherwise wouldn't. People who absolutely don't have enough money to buy all these games which go instantly to backlog for full price.

It's absolutely the right of the devs to sell their game for any price they want. But I also don't think as a consumer who buys games for their library, and not for instantly playing, I should feel guilty about not wanting to buy each and every game at 10 to 20 dollars a pop.

I'm interested in this game, but to be responsible to me and my family, I'll probably be passing on it for a while.

I've got a neutral opinion about the price increase personally, but I do find humour in a game's price being raised because it has had free content released for it and how someone can characterize and/or justify it without seeing the price increase as appearing as now charging money for the previously free content itself. :)

"We gave away free content but we now want you to pay a bit for it." is the end result. That's fine, but funny when passed through the rewording machine known as "the marketing department". :)

coffeecup: [...] this is no "free" update, just another form of a paid DLC included already in the base game. [...]
A form that takes away the option to choose if one wants to purchase said DLC or not.

MIK0: While my interpretation can be disproved, I believe that in this case the devs move have sense. It's a good compromise between being faithful to your previouse customers and earning from new content developed from the game.

The original Shovel Knight will be at the same price, but with a name change.
Shovel Knight until 3/3 -> Treasure Trove ( original game plus 2 big dlc )
Shovel Knight after 3/3 -> Shovel of Hope ( original main part of the game )
The other two part of the game are actually new content and can be standalone

Treasure Trove contains 3 separated part of the same game, probably priced to what Shovel Knight is priced today.
Combined on Switch will cost 25$ while the one part fo the game will be 9.99$. I hope the same price applies to pc.
In the end the game that you can purchase today won't change, but new content you'll have to pay for.

I'm more bothered by the fact the the new content will be available first on Switch, even if those content are already being developed for the kickstarter backers on other systems and should be made available there first.
Perhaps I don't get the point you're trying to make as I don't really follow what they're doing, but it's my understanding from GOG's newspost that starting tomorrow there will be only one version of the game on PC - the one that will cost more due to the free content that has already been released, and the new free content that will be released later this spring.

If an original version on PC would still exist and be sold, what is the point of the "permanent price increase" heads up?
