A platformer that you'll surely dig.

Shovel Knight, the award-winning platformer that devout lovers of the genre are constantly raving about, is 33% off for a few more hours. Grab it while it's hot!

Starting tomorrow, March 3rd, the game will be getting a permanent price increase. This will better reflect the free content that the game has received since its release, as well as the upcoming free update that will be added to it later this spring.

Existing owners of the game will not be affected by the price change.

To better understand the reasons behind it, make sure to read this comprehensive Q&A by developers Yacht Club.

The 33% discount will last until March 2nd, 11PM UTC. That's tonight, so act fast!

CharlesGrey: Also, it's not "overvalued" if it sells -- which it did, and I suspect it will continue to do so.
It sure did, by the tune of well over a million copies as of last spring.

I would love to see more sales breakdown like this. I'm bit of a numbers geek so seeing how a project turned out in sales and on which platform is always interesting to me. Like this older sales breakdown for Defender's Quest.
This seems like the best compromise they could have gone for. Their other options were to either:
-Cut the stretch-goals.
-Implement them halfheartedly.
-Make everyone pay from day 1.
-Maintain quality and keep it free.

First, second and third all result in broken promises and/or an inferior product. As for the fourth, the content will still be free for anyone that bought the game within 3 years since its release. The only change for people that didn't buy it yet is that the game as a whole gets a price-hike, rather than the price drop that you'd usually expect - although the game as it was at release, Shovel of Hope, will still be cheaper now. Considering the quality of the content released, this seems like the fairest and healthiest compromise to make, instead of going for throwing the game in the bundle bin. For those unhappy with this, it might help to think of it as being the reverse of the usual situation where you buy a game at launch only to see the cheaper and straight-up superior GOTY version come out next year.

Well, there you go.

Some interesting numbers, but it's sad to see that GOG and Humble are at only about 1% of total sales each, while Steam is above 30%.

And I guess it's also noteworthy that sales on consoles and handhelds dwarf the number of PC sales, with sales on 3DS alone almost equaling the combined number of copies sold for PC.

Exactly, that was on my mind too. Early backers/supporters/adopters are vital, especially for a smaller dev studio. And yet they usually get the short end of the stick, paying the highest prices, and receiving broken and incomplete games. I fail to see how it's such a bad thing, if for once the devs show their appreciation for those early supporters, by rewarding them with a better deal overall.

Besides, who is even getting worked up over this? You'd think that all the hardcore fans bought their copies long ago, and those still waiting for some steep discount after all this time are, at best, only vaguely interested in Shovel Knight. Why rage so much, over something you barely care about? *shrug*

Matruchus: I always value games content wise. Curently it has only 6-7 hours worth of content which drops it into less then 5€ category for me. That is my criteria. Sure it plays on the Super Mario theme for all of us oldies and makes me hype up but pricewise its no go.

CharlesGrey: Where did you get that from?

UhuruNUru: Why Not?
Really, you answered that yourself, by "I don't care for it.", and also shows why thet didn't charge you.
They get no backlash from owners, that way.

Why not?
If you don'y already own it, you either were waiting for the price to drop, or don'y care.
Providing so called free content, linked to a price rise, isn't going to attract any new customers.
If existing owners get that content free, new customers should as well.

They would be justified in not dropping the price, for their old game, by adding new "free" content, but by raising the price, it's not free, and claiming that is a lie.
Free must apply to everybody, not a restricted subset.

Old games should become cheaper, over time, not more expensive.
Adding extra content for free, justifies slowing down the drop in price, not increasing it.

As this thread shows, it's putting off new customers, not attracting them.
That's why not, it bad for consumers, and a bad decision for the devs, as well.
Not sure you read my post. >.> If you don't own it already, why not? I don't like that there's a price increase, but most people who actually wanted this title should already have it. a $10US price point (on sale) should not be prohibitive. If it is, then you probably have the wrong hobby. The game wasn't $60US or even $40US, It wasn't even $20US. I'm not sure I see the reason to have not bought the game. Sure NOW you have a reason, but before they announced a price increase (the base game is still the same cost, btw, it will just be a different name) there was no reason not to get it other than being cheap. Devs gotta eat, too.
You guys overanalyze this stuff. Its a videogame.

I can understand not liking it on principle, if you feel like the price increase and separation of the added content into cheaper versions nullifies the promise of the new content being free, with the added expectation that the price of games drops over time. Paradoxically, I feel like some people might have been less upset had there only been a price increase and no option to buy parts of it separately, so that they wouldn't feel like they were buying DLC. That way of looking at it, though, feels like you'd be blaming Yacht Club for the DLC sins of other developers. They haven't exactly been anti-consumer so far, so it doesn't feel like they're trying to be sneaky.

Admittedly, I also think GOG screwed the pooch here with this sale. It was supposed to be from Feb 23 all the way through March 2, going by the bottom part of Yacht Games's blog post. Now GOG did have it on sale for a few days, then not, then again. At the same time, GOG should have announced this sale on Feb 23, not on the very last day.

Maxvorstadt: Uhm what? They rise the price because of "free" content? Well, that`s not free content then!!!!
Yup, exactly.

If they wanted to charge for it, then they should have been up-front with the cost of their DLC.
This game has been on my wishlist for quite some time, but it had never reached a price point, that I would consider acceptable. With the price increase now that is even less likely to happen. But then again the devs have the right to sell their game at whatever price they want, just as well as I have the right to not make a purchase. For them I do hope that they did the maths on this and this pricing strategy is going to maximize their profit.

Kudos to GOG for giving us a fair warning, though. That's good business practices.
It might be a good idea to review the new store description for Treasure Trove. It talks about a lot of content that isn't actually in the game yet, but makes it sound like it's all there already.
You all must admit the FACT that you are losing the chance to enjoy this awesome game!
Right now you see it more like dlc expansions but these are not, first you play the base game and once you finish it you'll find that all the characters are awesome. then you play Plague's knight campaign expecting a gimmicky re-skin of the main game and instead you will end loving the history more than the main game! and now you get to play the most badass undead knight and you simply delete from your wishlist !!
People like you don't deserve this awesome game. I wish I had such quality available while strolling through the endless corridors of pitfall on the atari 2600. Hell! this games deserves a physical release, and it's a shame it's only available on nintendo platforms.
To anyone dissing this game due to this price change, please at least "ask a friend" to lend you a copy, play the game and realize it's worth!

Thanks for clarifying. Had a feeling it was GOG who fumbled this one.

Yeah. I was coming to this thread to note that they should put an "asterisk" on the store page to note that Body Swap, and the Spector Campaign will be added sometime in April for no extra charge. And that the King Knight's Campaign and Battle Mode will be added later the year, also for no charge.
