At least that's what I've always thought for a long time. My son liked them (Star Wars games) but they always looked like lame arcade games to me (I know some folks like arcade games and I'm not meaning to be disrespectful... perhaps you think strategy games are lame because they're too slow or something...to each his own).

Because my son (and one of my nephews) likes the Star Wars games, I purchased most of them here when I could catch them on sale and then didn't much think about them. But the other day I was reading some of the manuals.... and boy there are two of them that sound like real old school RPG's and something I would definitely like. Knights of the Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic II The Stith (or something like that). Anyway I don't remember my son ever playing those on the Nintendo or PS.

Are they really as good as what I'm thinking (they sound GREAT) or are they merely arcade shoot 'em ups with RPG elements. From what I've read so far from the manual it doesn't sound like that.

I'm not ready to start a new game right now so that's why I haven't installed it yet... but if it is like I'm thinking then Knights of the Old Republic is going to be the next game I start.

I'm gonna shill for Jedi Academy at least since it's on sale and imo a great game, but I'd suggest checking out gameplay footage first.

sorry I have nothing to say on the other games
KOTOR is an RPG with some relatively minor arcade elements (using turrets, pod racing). I would say it's a must play if you're a Star Wars fan, maybe not as much a priority if you're not.

I haven't played KOTOR 2 since its initial release and I'm overdue to check it out with the restored content mod, but I remember being somewhat disappointed with it.

Jedi Knight and Jedi Knight II first though. I like Academy, but the Katarn games are way better. JK 2 is probably the best SW game out there, except for maybe KOTOR.

Knights of the Old Republic is legendary -- across all games, not just for a Star Wars game. As of a couple years ago, Metacritic considered it #26 best on the list of all PC games it ever aggregated reviews for (these rankings change, so it may not be in exactly the same spot today).

On the other hand, because it's old, it's only rated 87% on steam more recently. That's still good, but its 2003 graphics do suffer by comparison to modern games. Gog users are more forgiving to old games; it's 5/5 here.

The sequel is also legendary, but not *as* much as the first.

Again, this is based on my notes from 2 or 3 years ago, so details may have changed. But legends are still told of KOTR around campfires late at night...

Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 are based on D&D 3.x so they're old-school RPGs in Star Wars clothing. Fantastic games.

Knights of the old republic games are real rpgs. Combat is garbage, but some of the quests and choices are interesting.
Kotor 1 is the standard Star Wars experience, very similar in spirit to the original trilogy.
Kotor 2 (created by a different team) has a somewhat darker and more complex story, somewhat of an attempt to deconstruct the usual Star Wars tropes. Infamously it has an incomplete ending (though there's a mod which is supposed to mitigate that problem).

The Jedi Knight games are also great, if one is interested in lightsaber combat.

Star Wars games are like pizza.

Even when they're bad, they're still pretty good.
You're not kidding? You weren't aware of these classic full fledged Star Wars RPGs by Bioware and Obsidian?

I've only played half of the first one, but I'd say it is your typical Bioware RPG with all the good, bad and bland that entails. Now, I don't know what RPGs you like or dislike, but IMO it's definitely an RPG, and the combat is party-based, tactical real-time with pause. Not particularly deep and interesting but not arcade shoot em up either.

To compare it with Bioware's other RPGs I'd say it's halfway between Neverwinter Nights and Mass Effect (although you might consider the latter one more of an arcade shoot em up with RPG elements already?).

I'll second that. Jedi Academy isn't anything special in single player but it's a fantastic if you play multiplayer. To this day I still haven't seen another game handle sword fighting as well as JA (and JO, to a lesser extent) does. It's an action game that is easy to learn how to play but difficult to master.

The KotOR games are good RPGs. The first KotOR seems to get the most attention but I think the second has the more interesting story and characters, with or without the restored content.
Jedi knight 2 jedi outcast and jedi knight 3 jedi academy are both good games. Knight of the old republic I and II are among the best rpg I've played. They are well written and surprisingly philosophical. It's a must play in my book for a rpg lover
Knights of the Old Republic is a great game! It has a nice setting and memorable characters, the companions that join you (both good and evil) are really cool.

I also don't think much of Star Wars games in general, this is one of the very few that I like (the others being SW Galactic Battlegrounds and the SNES games, but all of these are very different from KOTOR.)

I have never been able to play the sequel as it doesn't get along with integrated Intel video cards.
TIE Fighter was my jam.
Watch a little bit of the beginning of a blind LP for KOTOR to see if it's your style. The games aren't that difficult to play, it's the storyline that draws you in. KOTOR 2 has a few updates mechanics, but is essentially the same game.

The Dark/ Forces/Jedi Knight series also has a pretty good storyline. Plus you can't go wrong with throwing Stormtroopers off cliffs.

Hell yeah! Fly for the Empire! Rebel fighters were no match for an Advanced or Defender.

Honestly, your perception of Star Wars games is really limited. Yes, MOST of SW are arcades and action, like Super Star Wars platformers, Rogue Squadron flight arcade and Dark Forces shooter. However, Knights of the Old Republic are indeed great RPGs, in fact being precusors to Dragon Age and Mass Effect. There is Empire at War RTS.
