Starmaker: How is the trusted guy going to check the validity of, say, a Steam code he's given?
Well if it came to that level of wariness, he could sign into one of their Steam accounts (after they've changed to a temporary password, let's say) and check himself, and if it doesn't work then that's that. If there's only one Steam code, that would work. If both people are using Steam codes, then they can trade the item through Steam itself safely.

As for the elitist thing, saying "All these people are bad (but no idea about anyone else, lol)" is the same as saying "All these people are good (no idea about anyone else, lol)", apart from the fact that the latter is actually useful and provides positive information that directly helps people rather than negative information that simply leaves them stuck in place, only knowing who not to trust. It's also pretty elitist to say "No, we won't do this because I say so", to be honest. This is a simple record of facts, not some hegemony or something. It's up to everyone else, this won't really affect me to be honest, but I just think it's better to say "This will work" rather than "this won't work" and leave it at that.

I agree with you about elitism, but checks like these are seriously too much hassle for trades that for the large part don't even involve licenses.

I know you are not setting out to create "some hegemony or something", but history has shown us time and time again that this is what you will get in the end. People will judge others whether they are on the list or not - being on the list is a confirmation of character. Even though you do not set it up to be so or not. In my opinion it is better to be judged " not a scammer" than "not a trustworthy person".

I have never said "we won't do it", I have said I do not like it and given reason why. If you do it or not is up to you. If I do not like it I will just not participate.

edit - and I would prefer to not have my name on any type of list what so ever...

Well I think I/we have got ahead of my/ourselves here - I wasn't stating this is something we must do, but rather that, if you remember my original post, a list of scammers is completely 100% pointless, whereas a list of people that users have had good experiences with is useful. That's all. It's like having a list of people who have a driving license, rather than a list of people who don't. As I said, if it's Steam to Steam trading, that can be done in-client, and if it's GOG to GOG trading, someone said they could make a site that checks it. Other than that... Well I guess people should be more careful about somehow buying a game they don't want instead of one they do...

You do know the concept of a "Steam Key", right? It's just a string of numbers, that the only way to check is to try to redeem it, with one of the following outcomes.
1) You redeem it, and game is added to your games list
2) You try to redeem it, but you already have the game, thus key remains valid
3) You are notified that the key has already being used
4) You are notified that the key isn't valid for your region
5) The key is invalid.
While trading of steam keys can be done in-client, it's no different from doing it through any other messaging system, be that PMs, e-mails, text messages or even plain snail mail.

And as for a "Trusted Traders" list, there is one in the classifieds thread, usually after each offer. It usually reads something like "previous trades with: @@@, XXX, YYY"

Any time you obtain a steam game outside of steam is through a steam code. That includes bundles, amazon, physical copies, gmg, gg and developer giveaways. So far, I've seen (and traded) more codes than gifts tbh.

have done more than just "said" it. If you go to http://williampegg.net, there is a "sample" trading application. It's in a very very raw form, but it does facilitate trading and validating codes. If either party is trading a GOG code, then they might benefit from using this, as then at least the recipient of a GOG code knows they're not being screwed over.

However I'm trying to keep this off the GOG forums, so please don't reply to this post, instead post it on the forum on my site.

I almost agree with you, but I think the more productive solution is to have a monitor start throwing out the ban hammer at that spammer, especially if they are someone who hasn't even bought a game here. Or at the very least disable forum posting privileges.
